Re: Coronavirus

A remarkable coincidence at my job.

Yesterday was the last day to pick up stuff from the office and since this morning 80+% of employees work from home.

Also today, we get an email that an employee in a Ticino office has tested positive.

Me. The pasta, pasta sauces, rice and toilet roll have now been replenished. Noticed a difference with fresh produce, nothing from France or Italy now the garlic comes from Egypt and the grapes all the way from India!

Migros seems to have a new employee who's sole job is to wipe all the baskets. COOP still has the self-service hand sanitizer.

There's tape on the floors marking distance to stand in queues (though there aren't any queues) the cashiers wear gloves and I saw one customer wearing a mask.

Some stuff has been taped off.

Woe betide you if you dare to clear your throat. I did that and all eyes on me glaring

I thought as much. As the panic buying took place at the weekend and Monday, now it's all ok again.
That said, I'm going to shop tonight or tomorrow, and definitely not on Saturday with the sheep.

I went to the topCC in Winterthur. Big store, wide aisles even at checkout people kept their distance. Big carts - more than a meter long.

A bit thin on the non food items like soap, plastic wrap, toilet paper.

Lots of meat and snacks, drinks. Fresh fruit, vegetable replenished. Dairy was pretty good. Some holes in dried beans and so on - maybe because that comes from Italy.

All the tomatoes came from Spain today.

You can get a free coffee after shopping and they still offered that. I declined.

Hand sanitizer at the entrance.

My hands are dry to the point of cracking so I wore disposable food service gloves. The guy checking me out wore the same.

Re: Coronavirus

According to the Times, the antiviral drug favipiravir is useful.

In the Shenzhen trial, however, 91 per cent of patients receiving the drug had an improvement in the condition of their lungs, compared with 62 per cent of the control. Patients receiving favipiravir tested negative for the virus within an average of four days of treatment, compared with 11 days for the control group.

“In view of the safety, obvious efficacy and availability of the drug, researchers have officially recommended favipiravir to medical teams and suggested it be included in the treatment plan as soon as possible,” said Dr Zhang, the head of the centre.

Edit: The above is from China. Japanese doctors have not had similar results. We'll see.

I went to our local Migros today in Greifensee, and it was almost fully re-stocked (still no toilet paper, though). But all the pasta and milk, etc. was back on the shelves. I could see a lot of workers frantically trying to get the shelves re-stocked, pushing around trolleys of stuff. I was yelled at by one of the workers who was beginning to re-stock the kidney beans when I asked her if I could have a can of them.
There were a LOT of elderly people in the store, which kind of bothered me. It's really a shame if they don't have someone to shop for them. I also noticed a strip of tape on the floor at the checkouts, which I assume is to tell people to stand at that distance, before the person ahead of them. At the apotheke, there were signs outside, saying that only one family at a time was allowed inside.

Yes, we all know that teabagging and dogging have other meanings. What do you have lined up next -- something about using the rear entrance?

Same thing here, in the Rheintal. Pretty much everything looked normal, if anything very few people. Maybe 5 or 6 shoppers in the whole mid-sized store.

Hoping to find some sporting equipment for the kids I thought I would be smart and go to Aldi. Nope, anything deemed non food/urgent like light bulbs, footballs acetone, tools, toasters etc.. was sealed off. I gazed longingly at a vegetable steamer before a member of staff gently shooed me away

You can order sporting goods online at oschner sports, most orders by 5 pm arrive next day.

At my small local Migros they were out of regular sugar. Pasta on the shelves was depleted but was being recharged as I visited. Meat section was a bit thin but not totally out. More employees than customers at the moment I visited.

The countryside has been really quiet since yesterday. An occasional walker and dog, a few kids riding their bikes. I look out over the hill and down at town and it seems like nothing is moving.

Just to be clear on this, as long as you have no symptoms, is it OK to go for a walk in ones or twos, being careful to keep a reasonable distance from others? I'm presuming so as a bit of sunshine and a good stroll have to be beneficial -- physically and mentally. But I've not seen this explicitly mentioned. Same with cycling, running etc. Can someone clarify? Thank you.
