Re: Masks

In my local coop and migros, about half the shoppers wear a mask and gloves. I see many people walking outside with a mask too. And many many wear them incorrectly, I must say

If you are going to wear a mask you need to know how to put them on.

See here: https://www.wikihow.com/Put-on-a-Medical-Mask

And remember WASH YOUR HANDS before you touch the mask; DO NOT TOUCH IT while being worn. If necessary adjust it by the edges. After you remove it, dispose of it properly and WASH YOUR HANDS.

Oh, did I mention WASH YOUR HANDS!?

I'm not certain a home-made mask is going to be much good.
-Everyone one in hk who wears masks are well informed and trained how to do that properly, wash hands before, take it off, how to fold it correctly, put into a bin with lid, wash your hands again. It's not hard to learn. It depends if you trust your people. We also remind each other constantly if somebody else forgot to press the nose wire tightly, not pulling it down their chin etc.

-Please go over to my thread "how to make your own protective mask" for new info regarding filtration efficiency. And for home made masks, make a few and really wash them good. Change filter as often as you can.

I think that would give you a false feeling of security. You shouldn't be next to someone or in the same room as someone, regardless.
Yes, but if you go to a grocery store here, you could very well be in the same 'room' with someone who has the virus or someone who had just been there that has it. Also, this is about trying to do what you can to help prevent spreading the virus. Personally, I would feel absolutely awful if I went to Migros and had the virus but didn't know it and spread it to others.

I totally agree with you that handwashing is best for the prevention. I always carry two bottles of disinfectant when going out, one for me and my wife, one for my 2 y.o daughter. Still, I do have a concern about airborne droplets.

I think homemade masks, though not as good at filtering as the professional ones, definitely can help trapping the airborne droplets, depending on the quality of the fabric/plastic. I'm not saying that the way in the link was perfect, but it is a funny/practical alternative for people who do not have access to medical masks nor the skills to sew.

Re: Coronavirus

Not sure if anyone posted this:

https://fluradar.org/?lang=en&from=t...appinstalled=0

The website seems to track flu & corona patients across different locations based on self-report (so privacy concern is less an issue). I would assume very few people would do false reporting on purpose. The number looks quite reasonable to me.

Thank you so much for posting / sharing those diagrams about the filters, Spaghetti. They're very helpful! x

I really don't understand the need for apocalyptic doom and gloom mood.
Because many of us can count at risk close family and friends in double figures. If it's not because of their age or medical factors, it's because they're frontline workers exposed to the risks on a daily basis. If by being cocooned for a few of months, we can reduce the risk to the them or relieve the strain a little, so be it. It's our duty.

Just got off the phone with OH's 90yr old mum in lockdown in northern Athens. She placed a food delivery order over the phone yesterday and was given a delivery date of 9th April unless she could collect. She explained that she's 90, so they're delivering her order this afternoon. Makes me wonder if Switzerland are going to relax their rules regarding Sunday opening to spread the strain on food deliveries?

However, it is clear that the UK has a crazily high, disproportionate number of utter ****-heads and it's situations like this that you see how far we have fallen and degenerated as a culture. Massive levels of general ignorance...
There was a news story at the end of ITN 6.30pm news on Friday that had me freaking fuming. It was a little boy and his mum hand delivering loo rolls to their elderly neighbours and was being protrayed as an act of kindness. No testing. No social distancing. No leaving the loo rolls on their doorsteps. Just a 'look at me and how kind my little boy is'. FFS Whilst the intention is good, it's damned foolhardy.

I wonder how many strange looks I would get if I wear one. I still find it a bit strange that I have only ever seen one person wearing one here...
OH just saw a lady walking past our house and said she looks like she's in the Jesse James gang.

Better donate your unused masks to a hospital.
Been thinking about that as we have 2 of the 3m ffp2 masks left over from decorating. I'm torn between donating them to my local doctor, or saving them for if we do contract it and need to be hospitalised, in an effort protect the medical staff who attend to us.

I'm mask making today .. As a kids project..

Took me bloody ages to work out how to setup the kids toy sewing machine but I've now sewn a straight line across a piece of kitchen towel .. Happy days, I'm so proud.

Yeah I'm not gonna make n95 protection, just a bit of fun.. I'm sure I'll find some fabric in the wife's wardrobe.

Thanks for the tips (about going to the store). Not sure what you meant exactly with the "WTF" though. ^^^

Perhaps I should have elaborated that I also don't want to inadvertently spread the virus in case I have it and don't know it.

I thought you were implying you have ongoing contact with your 84 year old mother-in-law.

Social distancing does not apply to people who live in the same household.

I don't think anything will be able to protect you if you go near your wife's wardrobe with a pair of scissors.

I hear your pain, not literally speaking. Having to fetch meds in pharmacy, the pharmacy assistant wearing a mask, being behind protective plexiglass and me having eyes, nose and ears stuffed....gawd. I heard nutting. She couldn't get close, nor could I lipread. I feel for anyone with impacted hearing function, any impacted sensory function. Hang in there!!!! It is very isolating, not even thinking of covid.

My s-i-l is a doctor and already exposed (most probably) on a daily basis. I can't. Think of it anymore.

You know, 2 months ago I was in Migrolino on a Friday night, a couple with these kinda kinky masks show up. I noticed they are super dressed up and can't contain themselves. I was wondering where they were going . Considering that it is none of my business to ask and that I'd come across as a complete oaf, I just said to my climbing buddy if we aren't in fact a bit nuts, climbing on Friday nights instead of whatever that weird hip club was. We were covered with chalk (well, both of us are used to it from schools, she probably more), sweaty and really far from any kinky thoughts, it made us laugh a lot. We should at least carry something...like...a ruler sticking out of our pants back pockets.
