Spain is now the worst affected country in Europe.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-52020060
Spain: 2700 died / 40000 infected = 6.75%
Switzerland: 70 died / 8000 infected = 0.88%

Where does that difference come from?

Criteria before one is tested.

PS: Last time I looked Switzerland has 122 deaths and over 9K infected

No clue why BAG is reporting lower numbers for deaths suddenly, would love to hear an explanation from them for this, since the 122 is also what they themselves reported.

I got my numbers from 20 Min. This would make it 1.4% which is still a big difference.

Bar Mitzvah online

Interesting, I wonder if churches going online will lose members or gain more. Probably younger ones.

Has anyone else seen the catholic priest giving drive through confession? How nice of him..

Difference in criteria for testing,
Hospitals overloading,
Elderly people are in Southern countries more part of social life,

Germany for example is relatively widely testing, so they also have a lot of healthy feeling positives explaining their relatively low number of deaths atm.

Much as it would be fantastically encouraging if those are the final numbers of the day, they've been updating them a few times over that course of the day recently. This is what I've noted from the same source for the past week...

Tue 17 Mar 2,742 + 389 / D 27 + 8 308.7/1M **Shops closed**
Wed 18 Mar 3,115 + 373 / D 33 + 6 360/1M
Thu 19 Mar 4,222 + 1,107 / D 43 + 10 488/1M
Fri 20 Mar 5,615 + 1,393 / D 56 + 13 625/1M
Sat 21 Mar 6,863 + 1,248 / D 80 + 24 793/1M
Sun 22 Mar 7,474 + 611 / D 98 + 18 835/1M
Mon 23 Mar 8,795 + 1,321 / D 120 + 22 988/1M
Tue 24 Mar 9,117 + 322 / D 122 + 2 1,053/1M
Yeah, updating has become weird. They also push out numbers on the 23rd, but count them in press releases as 24th, first they did one daily update, now it can happen 4 or even 5 times a day. And then there is the issue with that in the press release they talk about by Geneva confirmed numbers, but for all crawlers they give out total numbers including those not yet confirmed by Geneva.

I now just stick to https://interactif.tdg.ch/2020/covid-19-carte-suisse/ and ignore all the others.

Well, I believe the difference lies in the size of population between metropolitan areas. Zurich is Switzerland's largest city and it is barely scraping the 400k mark. Madrid for instance has roughly 6.5 million with a population density larger than Zurich. Then they have Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, etc...combine a large population with the age factor and you're pretty much screwed IMO.

I do not think it's got to do with ol' faxing ways..but worldwide - once there there are reliable numbers available, the stock exchange responds.

Size of population is a valid argument for difference in total numbers, not for huge differences in percentages.

In the current press release they now speak of 90 deaths, but these are their own numbers: https://interactif.tdg.ch/2020/covid-19-carte-suisse/ and that one clearly mentions 124 now.

I'd love if they would get their shit together when it comes to numbers.

In part, I believe that is has to do with the ol' faxing ways. Those faxes all need to be confirmed/validated/approved and then some intern has to enter the data into a database, which then also needs to be approved...etc.

Spain: 2700 died / 40000 infected = 6.75%
Switzerland: 70 died / 8000 infected = 0.88%

Where does that difference come from?
One of the reasons is surely that in Madrid there have been many infection cases in residences for elderly people. Another one may be that in Spain there are now around 5000!!! health professionals infected; even if they are quarantained, they may have spread it all over the hospital before they were.

There may also be a higher number of old people with previous respiratory diseases and/or affected by pollution than here. From a statistics with 800 deaths in Spain, 540 were aged 80+

No, but population density, age composition and social habits provide a rationale for different rates.

Ok, in part then the intern's length of her/his/their lunch break, ol' faxing ways and preventing stock exchange overreaction by making the stats a tad wobblier.

Maybe the stats are wobbly because post mortem findings of other causes of death, on top? I am sure that eventuality has been debated here, just haven't seen it.

Today 2nd death in CZ. Somebody young who got the virus (March 18) and did not know he's sick with a grave illness, aside of covid19

Stay home, respect the rules.

Medical staff is risking their lives and you don't want to overload our hospitals. If you're younger, mortality rate is low because you can still get that minimal medical care you'd need. With overloaded hospitals, that won't happen for long.

Stay home. Don't be irresponsible.
Get into an empty tram and get yourself outside of the city into the forest for a walk. Enjoy!!!

You need to seek out figures sorted by date of test, not the numbers as of the date of release. Date of testing shows the true time sequence and is flattening....but it's not certain if changes in testing routines have an effect.
