Daughter 2 has just Skyped in tears as she heard on the News about elderly people found dead or dying, abandonned by staff in several Care Homes in Spain. She used to manage a Care Home and she was totally distraught. Had not heard about this before- this is just dreadful.
Just read about it.

I may hope that utterly severe punishments will be handed out.

I agree in principle but the base numbers have to be reasonably accurate otherwise the trend is false.

Might be old news but University Hospital Zürich has developed a blood test to inform if you have had the virus, seems like a useful tool.
Hence my example which is like 3% tolerance, meaningless in the large scale.

It's also important for the population to be able to trust the numbers since the numbers are the backbone for the restrictions.

Re: Coronavirus

Italy has reported an increase of 743 in deaths of coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

That is an increase from Monday, which had been the second day of a downward trend.

Of course, these numbers have to be treated with caution when you get frightening statements like "Italian coronavirus cases likely '10 times higher than reported' the head of the Italian agency that is collating the data said today."

Don't think the x10 is really frightening, it seems about fair or even on the low side, we know that majority hardly experiences any problem, we also know that people with light symptoms are told to stay at home and don't get tested.

Well, not exactly rules but recommendations https://foph-coronavirus.ch/

As you can read, work related displacements are only a part of the issue.

I also see the seniors strolling as a bit ungrateful. We, the younger, are stopping the whole thing to save them and they keep going to the same places. There's a hill with a nice view to the valley close to my apartment, behind my window I see them going up every day to gather together in the same place. It's OK to go out for a walk, but these days it's preferable to walk the less popular trails (personal responsibility).

Fortunately, it's just a minority. The building where I live is full of elder people and I have not seen them for a while. I doing home office next to the window, so I'm sure of that =)

The only rules in place I think are:

1) restrictions to border crossing
2) closure of restaurants, bars, coiffures and other business
3) assembly of more than 5 people,100 CHF fine (except families of more than 5 when staying inside their home)
During the Cold War many house's in Switzerland were required to include a bunker in their construction.
In which families were supposed to keep the basic necessities of life, including some form of
emergency rations in case of nuclear attack ( although in Switzerlands case ) it would be radioactive
fallout, drifting over the border from the combat zone over in West Germany.

No doubt these bunkers would have been forgotten about unless used for storage, therefore
I wonder whether families have been opening up their bunkers ( thanks to the crisis ) to check
whether any of them still contain a time capsule of the basic necessities of life leftover
from the Cold War ?

Every bunker in Switzerland is well stocked with the basic necessities.

Wine. It's an excellent source of antioxidants.

Ours contains two freezers, a drum kit and a whole load of rubbish. It was inspected fairly recently and found to be in order (?) with the exception of some knitting wool, which we were told to remove with immediate effect!!!???

Re: Coronavirus

Sweden seems to be doing fine for the moment.

Quote:
On Monday, Sweden's former state epidemiologist and current advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO), Johan Giesecke, encouraged Swedes to go out and enjoy the spring sun.

Right or wrong, Sweden does not seem to have a worse virus problem than its neighbours, according to the numbers of declared cases.

On Tuesday, Sweden reported 2,272 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, while Norway and Denmark – which each have around half the population of Sweden – reported 2,566 and 1,577 cases, respectively.

I keep the wine in the garage, along with the other basic necessities (motorcycles and parts).

In case of a catastrophe, wife goes to the basement, I go to the garage!

Everyone uses them for storage. They're not forgotten about. I keep 10'000 rolls of toilet paper in mine.

Re: Coronavirus

Our basement's fallout shelter is the laundry drying room!! The door is about 30-40cm thick and permanently propped open - the windows (also permanently open) have thick metal covers that just hang down. It was really creepy the first few times I went down to do laundry. Nothing stored in there but a drying rack and clothespins, though! (The housekeeping-couple has their entire keller full of water, wine, and food - even before this craziness)

Well this bunker in Switzerland has more than toilet rolls stashed away for all those Bitcoin millionaires
wanting to safeguard their wealth during a crisis.

Millionaires are stashing their Bitcoin fortunes in a bunker under a Swiss Mountain

Re: Coronavirus

So I have now heard from multiple universities in different cantons, that they are planning full shutdown measures come this Friday (27.03.2020) after some meetings today. They seemed surprised at the move, as they were all basically already shut down so it seems like its a coordinated affair from government.

Re: Coronavirus

This is rather interesting
https://www.washingtonpost.com/healt...5b5_story.html

After studying a number of virus samples, scientists have found that there has not been a lot of mutation within the virus and they are hopeful that an effective vaccine can be found. Eventually.

This also suggests that the high death rate in Italy was due more to the situation, population characteristics and etc than to virus strain.

Sorry, I think It might be behind a paywall.

Quote:
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will allow plasma donations from survivors of the novel coronavirus to treat coronavirus patients in the absence of an approved vaccine.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced yesterday that the state health department would begin the treatment, known as convalescent plasma, for the sickest coronavirus patients, echoing an approach used for some victims of the 1918 flu pandemic.

Sounds like a useful low risk approach

What is the difference between a lockdown and shutdown?
