Don't think that be the last time such happens. People only read that the tests are unreliable, that quarantaine isn't working (look at the cruise-ship) that people get released but later need to be quarantined again, that the longest incubation period has been 24 days, that some people never show symptoms at all. And suddenly your government wants to place a group out of Wuhan in your neighbourhood and release them after 14 days....

Who here would think this is a good idea for their own neighbourhood?

In the meanwhile South-Korea doubled the amount of confirmed infections to over 200 in the last 24 hours, and the Diamond Princess already has over 600 infections confirmed showing that the quarantine has failed, yet the Japanese government has just started releasing people from the ship with hundreds at the same time...
So Edwin, how would you do it ...

It’s weird how the markets have barely moved. China have basically not been working for 6 weeks, it seems impossible to me to have the worlds second largest economy down tools for so long without there being a profound economic impact world wide.
Denial, wishful thinking. They are just "betting" that soon all be back to normal.

So Edwin, how would you do it ...
I would not drag those people all over the world unless certain they do not have the virus. Could even set-up a camp in the region they came from and keep them there under Western healthcare and Western conditions to allow them better treatment than what the normally would have.

I don't like the Chinese government, I don't like how they let it end up going this wrong. But I give them credit for their willingness to understand that extreme conditions demand extreme responses. I mean how else can you try to keep areas properly quarantined if you're not willing to shoot those that want to break out of it. Problem is that they started doing it all way to late but can you imagine Zwitserland just locking off Zürich, closing all companies, cancelling all public events, shutting down almost every store, no more public transport and allowing every household to send out one person once a week to get food while police will beat the shit out of everybody and arresting them when breaking the rules.

It seems to be very patchy!
A dog bed I ordered on 4th February arrived yesterday while normally they take three to four weeks, other stuff I ordered in mid-January did not even get on a plane yet.

I'd probably give it a good disinfecting wash.

I have to travel and really don't feel like it.

What do you, guys, think it's gonna be like in a month...

More activity in Northern Italy. Several of the new cases are health care workers.

You’re young, relatively healthy. Lots of hand washing, especially after handling railings, door handles. Use a hankie or tissue to open bathroom doors after you’ve washed your hands. In fact, if you need to open any doors, or hang on to railings, use a hankie or tissue as a barrier. Don’t touch your face with your hands or put your fingers in your mouth.

I read something a few days ago that stated the best way to prevent a pandemic is handwashing in airports.

If you use hand sanitizer, rub your hands together till the stuff has evaporated.

I was in London first week of February....we were fine, no checks at the airport. I saw a few people with masks.

I do ride the train a lot, I need to follow my own advice about railings and stuff....

I think if you’re careful, your risk is somewhat reduced.

I think you are spot on. Now, this frequent handshaking and 3x kisses...aaaaaaaa. Can one be rude?

My hands are dead from all the sanitiser. I will not stop moving for a while and will cover a couple thousand miles on public transport, uf.

Now, I often think about the epicenters and people being sick and left to fend for themselves, it is tragic.

Re: Coronavirus

South Korea again doubled and now has over 400 infections confirmed, also China reports a 70yr old man who started to show symptoms not earlier than 27 days after infection. This combined with the research that showed 24 days of incubation time was possible (not the final maximum time, just the maximum time in their research group) make me amazed why official guidelines are still 14 days for many governments before suspected people are released again. (Keep in mind that the default test is not great and does not recognise the illness in half the cases.)

Sounds like a huge worldwide cluster happening.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of washing and simply not touching eyes, nose, face, mouth. It’s easier said than done though. Unconscious habits can be hard to break. It’s something a person could start working on now though.

Also making sure you have helpful things with you like moisture cream, ibuprofen, sanitizing wipes, etc. would be good. At the very least it means you don’t have to go into a crowded store or pharmacy full of potentially sick people to buy supplies.

I personally would have no reservations about NOT shaking hands or declining an embrace. It can be done tactfully and you could even make it appear as if you are declining out of concern for the other person.

I lack the experience here to know what Switzerland’s reaction will be and how quickly the medical system could be overwhelmed. With available information though, it’s not unreasonable to think that most people will be left to fend for themselves.

My estimate is that this area is about two months behind where China is now. Depending on how things develop, and what happens with the winter vacation travelers, I guess it’s even conceivable your trip is cancelled.

If it is a hotspot I'd refuse.

I think in a month it will be worse, but my prediction is as good as yours.

Yeah.

It may be faster with the Italian epicenter, on the other hand anything spreads faster in China considering the density.

No, it is far from that now. The plans are ok for travelling next few days/2wks so I should be ok for those, but the month and a half away .. I really wonder about.

Re: Coronavirus

The towns on lockdown in Italy are just a stone's throw from Milan. From Milan it's just a quick train ride to Luzern, Zurich, etc. The virus may very well be here already.

It's Fasnacht time in Luzern:

Maybe a fitting costume for this year:

Is that a Selfiestick?

And yeah, with all the cases going on, and all the people that visited our country over the last months I'm very happy yet also amazed that no case has been diagnosed here yet.

If it were, is there a 100% certainty the gov. would announce? I have no idea. If potential cases are intentionally not being confirmed via testing, then there also wouldn’t be anything to announce. And no possibility for panic.

“No one should know until everybody knows.” I think that was the line from the Contagion movie.

I’ve “heard” there are at least 12 people under observation and quarantine but have no details or documentable source for that.

Part of me likes to think the Swiss Way would be for the government to be making preparations behind the scenes for an organized response. However, I’ve heard nothing at all to validate that.

A co-worker went to see the Karneval in Cologne.

He's also a smoker and I sit about 2m to the right of him.

He has a good smokers' cough even when he's not sick.

The population density is not even an issue but rather the sanitary conditions.
(The population density in Wuhan for instance is smaller than the population density of Basel and Zurich)

When do we ever have a 100% guarantee that humans do what humans should do.

However I personally belief they'd announce it, and I don't think we'd panic from just a case. First we'd sort Lynch their careers if it gets public that they'd cover up, second if they want to stop a spread they want us to stop gathering and stop using public transport and such. Doing so for a couple of weeks is also much less economical pain than a full outbreak.
