They had to call in the German ambassador and get EU support to get at last their goods. They gave a good example to the US apparently on how to do that.

So if I see a group of people, they may not actually be there?
Here's a selection of things you absolutely don't and can't know if you see a presumably "huge group of random people":
- you don't know if they live together and are with each other anyway, therefore it hardly matters whether they're outside together
- you don't know if they work together anyway (because no, not everyone works from home), therefore it hardly matters whether they're eating their lunch together too
- you don't know how long they've been there or if they've just sat down for a quick minute to say hi
- you don't know whether anyone has already been immunised, therefore making their risk to infect anyone else roughly zero
- and many more options

Also fascinating how everyone sees these "huge groups of people" outside - you all see them from your window?

I see approx. 10 people in Basel, mostly on their own or in pairs or maybe threes, which mind you IS ALLOWED and of ridiculously minimal risk to anyone beyond said two or three people. I know not a single person who has met with anyone other than those they already live with in three weeks. Young, old and everything in between.

Quote:
This is how you get people's attention
"The Polish government has also increased the size of the fines for breaking the quarantine — from 5,000 to 30,000 złoty (€1,100 to €6,600), and prolonged the lockdown of schools until after the Easter break."

Now THAT is how you keep people in check.
And a clever way to generate revenue, given soon enough, people will be unemployed and stop paying taxes.

According to the rules, groups of two, three or four (unless from the same household) still need to keep a 2m distance between each other.

The only except is groups of five people where the distance doesn't matter, apparently.

The rules:

Quote:
Because people have not being fully complying with this measure and the rules on social distancing, the Federal Council has decided to ban gatherings of more than five people in public places, and especially in public squares, on footpaths and in parks. People in groups of fewer than five people must keep a distance of at least two metres from each other.
You would have thought someone would have prove-read it first.

Re: Coronavirus

So are there any sources of good or interesting statistics out of all of this?

Air polution?
Other deaths down, like traffic accidents?
Crimes rates? Are burglars self isolating now that everybody is at home?
Have junkies gone cold turkey?
Other disease, now that we're all clean and staying home?

On the crime rates, I'm almost surprised that we've not seen looting of the closed fancy shops, keeping that for next week in America?

I haven't see any yet but I'm sure they'll appear in due course.

It would be quite interesting to see how the rate of hospitalizations due to season flu have changed.

I can see obesity rates going up as people sitting at home are over-eating out of boredom or worry.

There's nothing like a crisis to expose how tenuous to non-existent any diplomatic ties and claims of friendship are. It's a free-for-all and many countries are only looking out for No.1, with no morals or scruples even considered.

Re: Coronavirus

Switzerland has reacted MUCH quicker than others, has tested MUCH more per capita than other countries (more than even SK), and has been able to flatten the curve MUCH quicker than most countries. And that is despite not packing everyone in protective plastic and keeping them inside. Maybe it's time to accept we actually didn't do so bad, despite apparently being godawful people, according to some comments.

What do you think will happen in respect to air pollution - and climate change (but who cares about that eh) - once everything restarts? Oh right, they will try to make up for lost time, speed up what they can, making it worse.

And don't worry, crime rates will rise soon enough. Widespread unemployment has a tendency to lead to that.

Since you're all dutifully staying inside 24/7, not going to work or getting any groceries or the mail or walking your dogs, I really don't see what the concerns are about. You're clearly 1000000% safe and also no threat to anyone else, nor is anyone a threat to you.

I quite agree. I see very good compliance with the rules here in Basel. Its important to remember that behaviour does not have to be perfect, but rather just good enough to keep the transmission rate below 1. We've flattened the curve quicker than other places with stricter rules.

With this in mind, I hope that we stick (in part) to the 19 April reopening date. Perhaps at first instance, shops could be allowed to open, with very strict rules governing the amount of people allowed inside at one time. After 2 more weeks we consider reopening some workplaces etc.

Even after a partial reopening of the economy, I think people are too sensible to start resuming normal behaviour and letting infections grow exponentially again.

Yep, read that too. That's why I've written I'm not worried about Uncle Sam.

It's Trump's way - America first. Trump style - everyone has a price.

I guess special circumstances demand extraordinary means, but treating other people as Eurotrash or some other....trash, is not going to get them very far after this mess will end.
It's funny, everyone thinks they're special and deserve more and they don't need friends....uhm, OK, we'll talk about that later.

If the hospitals end up being full of people who have not done what they are told then if anyone has an accident at home, or a heart attack or any other non-corona medical emergency then they are stuffed.

What you have been describing in early posts today people behaving in a very selfish way. You continue to take that attitude on this post too with added sarcasm.

I worry about the incidence of anxiety and depression, and people not accessing the care they need for chronic conditions.

Not really surprising is it? Yes, it appears Switzerland did take the right approach and reacted relatively soon in this situation. However, while for some, it might be something to be proud of, it really wasn't that big of a challenge in Switzerland's case. 8.5 million people living in a financially secure space with secure borders and no "real" urban centers.

It appears that Liechtenstein has handled the situation even better than Switzerland but I'm sure they aren't so smug about it. Thankfully most of the Swiss that I associate with aren't stereotypical asshats like some are.
