Re: Coronavirus

Another day in paradise
Quote:
This week alone, doctors on Trump's task force have gently walked back his proposition that subjecting the body to sunlight could act as a treatment for the virus.
They've been more forceful in rejecting the suggestion of ingesting disinfectant.
Earlier, a member of his team cast doubt on the country's testing capacity.
And multiple officials indicated the virus would likely return in the fall, even though Trump said it may not.

It would be a comedy except so many people are dying

You're wrong. The issue isn't that he floated it, as you call it, that's just your red herring. The real issue is the BBC's blatant lie.

Without that lie his musings wouldn't have made headlines elsewhere and the whole nonsense probably would have gone forgotten in no time, like the stupid stuff everybody else says at times.

To claim that his words are justification for the BBC's lie is bizarre. Very bizarre indeed. Next thing you're going to say is that BBC's his lap dog.

Many on here lament the mindset displayed by Republicans and especially Trumpists, namely that they'll eat any shit he feeds them. In many cases they have a strong point. However, trying to justify the BBC's lie shows exactly the same mindset - the target justifies the means, and anything and everything will do as long as Trump is the target.

There is simply no justification for the BBC's blatant lie. None.
Where is the article from the BBC where they have lied? Could you post a link please?

What a silly thing to say. His musings were heard by many and reported accordingly. I doubt if BBC was even in the room.

You're right, I should have provided that already. Here you are.

And just in case they should decide to alter the title later on:

I think the fact that he didn't suggest or advise people to actually inject disinfectant is the distinction.
Nope. Try again. The issue is most definitely that he said anything at all about disinfectant in relation to Covid 19 on a world stage. He should have just spoken to his science bods off camera.

Quote:
View Post
“And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute — one minute — and is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning?” he asked. “Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.”

He IS suggesting that disinfectant works in that he provides a statement what disinfectant does to the lungs.
Yep. This.

What exactly am I wrong about? What red herring? Where did the BBC lie? He said what he said and it has been deemed dangerous enough that disinfectant manufacturers are putting out warnings not to ingest their product.

Yes, it should be obvious that it's lethal but the POTUS, whom inexplicably huge numbers of folk voted for, asked about it on TV. End of. If you can't see that then that's entirely your issue.

And kindly refrain from putting your wildly hyperbolic words in my mouth.

Did you read the article or just the headline? There is no lie. No spin. Just reporting of what he said and how he appeared to say it and to whom. Followed by actual reliable science stuff.

If you think there is a "blatant lie" in that article then please, quote it. Point it out. The language used is tentative - suggests, appeared to. I think you have very much read into something that is simply not there.

Re: Coronavirus

This forum is rapidly becoming a real case of: "the lunatics taking over the asylum" and is basically becoming unreadable on any political topic. The irrational, illogical members like Full Circle, MC, Urs Max etc are happy to engage in nonsense circular arguments and tirelessly play devils advocate even if what they write makes absolutely no logical sense. Against that level of manic effort, the sane and normal members basically have no chance and are just wasting time even trying to inject some rationality into things.

Time to unsubscribe from these political threads. Enjoy, guys!

The problem with that kind of logic is that MSM lose any and every kind of higher ground they may have had once they do the same (repeatedly). And perhaps more importantly they lose the credibility they may have had. Heck, they even confirm Trump's "fake media".

The result is an even faster loss of subscribers. The MSM are digging their own graves by enticing ever more people to move on to other news sources.
This is exactly the point. The headline should have been “President Trump displays a lack of medical understanding”, but that wasn’t sufficient for the MSM so they printed a lie instead. It seems to me that the MSM have moved from proper investigative journalism and asking the right questions to a social media footing of trying to catch people out in order to claim a win.

I used to roll my eyes when President Trump would yell “Fake News”, but the longer his Presidency goes on, the more I believe that he has a point

An alternative view is that the MSM needed strong headlines to warn people of the dangers.

The problems here are that firstly a subgroup of Trump's viewers (not only in the US) are either not paying sufficient attention or are not smart enough to parse exactly what he said and instead just pick up some keywords and run with them.
Secondly, there is a subgroup who believe "scientists" who disagree with Trump's ideas are simply being obstructionists and have no merit, probably it is not possible to help this group?

It would be a comedy except so many people are dying
Comedy and tragedy are sometimes inseparable.

UK specific:

MD, in Private Eye, points out the good news - covid wards are quiet. The Nightingale hospital opened in the Excel centre has only 19 out of 2500 beds occupied. A&E (ER, Notfall) attendance down 25%.

Then came the death statistics. In one week, the number of deaths was 6000 higher than the average for the same week in the last 5 years. Half of them not linked to Covid-19. Maybe that 3000 weren't tested, but it could also be people not seeking help until too late for appendicitis, meningitis, sepsis etc. Maybe cancellation of routine appointments have allowed stable conditions to deteriorate.

A condition does not have to be life threatening to be an emergency. An eye doctor has noticed a significant decrease in the number of people coming in due to retinal detachment. The concern is that people are permanently going blind because of fear of A&E, or not wanting to be a bother...

If you notice a dark shadow in your vision (with or without floaters), seek medical help immediately.

On a similar theme, how many people here have/had the virus or know people who had - not wanting to reopen any recent wounds from such deaths so no need to mention those and my deepest sympathies for such cases.

This. You're talking about a subgroup of Trump supporters? Take Mr. Bolsonaro for instance...and others like him maybe? There's an...ahem epidemic of strong idiotic leaders who're thriving in the current global political climate.
