The problem is without shutting all shops, restaurants, libraries etc. then people do not take keeping 2 meters apart, washing hands & staying at home seriously.

Just look at the photos in the weekend papers of Zürich and Basel now they have opened shops, restaurants, etc.
People obviously did take social distancing measures seriously as the ETH study showed that the virus infection rate was already well in decline before the lockdown happened

Well more people will die from lockdown than Covid, more than from the Holocaust, quite an eye opener that you need to ask me this!
So you refuse, without any kind of reasoning and most of all without any kind of facts, certain estimates and projections and call them absurd even though the actual numbers aka facts known so far probably support them pretty well.

At the same time you accept another prediction as the gospel truth.

<facepalm>

ETA:
And, not really surprisingly, you compare the numbers of those who couldn't be saved to those of certain predicted economic developments even though the correct comparison would be to compare the latter to the effects of the likely development without lockdown but including a breakdown of the health system and the consequences thereof.

I kind of feel sorry for the countries that have to open up to crowds of tourists again. Wonder if they'll ask tourists to provide some sort of health certificates or whatever.

Bulgaria too, btw.

Keeping 2 meters apart, washing hands, staying at home if experiencing symptoms etc. can all be done without shutting all shops, restaurants, libraries etc.
Exactly, but the entire point is that too many people didn't abide by those precautions, the rate of infections increased so the next layer of measures was brought in. There was nothing 'random' about the way Switzerland implemented changes. It was all laid out in their 2018 Pandemic report which is freely available for anyone to read. Tom posted the link here in Feb and I was following it back in March so could pre-empt the lockdown to a degree.

Just an example. There's a little shop I frequent that can only accomodate 3 or 4 customers at the best of times. The week before lockdown, a couple of people were standing outside out of respect because there was an elderly gentleman (over 80) being served inside the shop. They only entered once he'd left, so I chose to wait outside until they'd been served also. The shop remained open throughout lockdown but adopted a one customer at a time rule.

Me too, though more like "gut - immune system - brain". In that girl's case autoimmunity was suspected: eating certain proteins would cause a strong reaction by the immune system targeting own body organs (a particular parts of the brain in her case, causing slight inflammation). Apparently not only food can cause such autoimmunity...

I have tickets for travel with Edelweiss in the 2nd week of July. I've been checking weekly and they restart flights to warmer places by mid-June and expect to restart their full operation by June 29.

The cynic in me is willing to bet there may be some restrictions by the end of June to travel inside the Schengen zone while no problem at all to travel way and back from Edelweiss destinations overseas.

Re: Coronavirus

On a different note, the Swiss authorities strongly recommend wearing face masks in public places now. So it's still a recommendation, not compulsory. They'll think of making them mandatory after monitoring what happens when the trains etc will be more crowded. (source: Dr.Koch during the usual briefing on pandemic)

I'm guessing he's going to a nice Arctic beach. They probably don't have a lockdown at the North pole.

Re: Coronavirus

F2, French national news just mentioned that the 2nd wave will be under surveillance by traces in waste water. So, the scientist analysing samples will be able to see possible increase and issue warning.

RTS1 (Swiss news) brought criticism of WHO and its leaders, in their 7.30pm news tonight. Pretty much the same points voiced here past few weeks. They added the Taiwan x China issue. I give local journalism a lot of credit, they remained informative, factual and independent. The evening RTS news edition will be available online.

Countries that rely on tourism have no other option, otherwise it's complete disaster for the whole sector.

These health certificates or passports in reality will give nothing useful for the safety of the traveler or in the combat of the virus. There have been reports of people catching the virus after recovery. It's all for show at the moment to make travelers comfortable that governments are doing something.

Croatia, everything is open for a week already. I mean the whole country has less than 200 active cases, make absolutely no sense tourism not to be functioning at the moment

I get that. I only wonder under which conditions. Bulgaria for instance, which is also amazingly safe from this pov, will open their sea resorts in July. They'll ask tourists to fill in some sort of form/declaration, will make some changes in the way hotels etc function. My countrymen are loyal tourists there, and in Greece too, so I know all of these because the tv channels already run ads and there are interviews with ambassadors in Bg, Greece, Turkey. So yeah, I know, some day people will travel....and spend their holidays with many people around. And get back home....

Re: Coronavirus

It is a while since I wrote: "you could not make this stuff up"!
Quote:
President Trump on Monday revealed he's taking hydroxychloroquine, a controversial drug that he's championed as a potential treatment for coronavirus despite limited evidence from the medical community.

He said he's been taking the drug for about a week-and-a-half along with a zinc supplement, adding he based his decision on positive reviews he's heard from front-line health care workers who have had good results treating patients with it.
Source

"Fox News's Neil Cavuto warned that people must be careful with hydroxychloroquine, saying immediately after President Trump said that he had been taking the drug for more than a week that it could kill people who had certain underlying health conditions.

Cavuto cited a Department of Veterans Affairs study that demonstrated the risks of taking hydroxychloroquine if a patient has respiratory or heart ailments. The study showed patients, who had these conditions and took the drug, died."

Bizarre, just bizarre
