Data released by a major Houston hospital system no longer includes information about the hospital system's ICU capacity, a change reportedly made just a day after it previously was updated to show the hospitals reaching 100 percent base capacity on July 6 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Houston Chronicle reported that the change occurred after a conversation "between Gov. Greg Abbott [R] and hospital executives in which the governor expressed displeasure with negative headlines about ICU capacity."

A spokesperson for Abbott's office denied to the Chronicle that the governor's office had asked for hospitals to provide fewer data about ICU capacity.

Same in Zurich, almost no one wearing a mask in the train, we were the only ones wearing one in the tram...... and social distancing must be a strange word for most.......
It's strange, but I have seen more people in masks in almost empty trains yesterday (on Sunday), even rather young people, than in more loaded trains today (on Monday).

One of my sons used public transport on Friday evening and wore a mask. Someone on the tram purposely barged him. In a separate incident on the same evening, one of his friends who he was meeting and who was also wearing a mask was deliberately coughed at. My son said he has heard that there is a sort of resistance group forming of people who are against the social distancing methods. I was interested to know if anyone has had a similar experience or has heard anything about this. My apologies in advance if it's been previously brought up on this thread.
I've seen a few similar stories in the US news. One was where a woman without a mask was in a Starbucks, and wearing masks in public was mandatory in that State. So another woman said something to the cashier about her not wearing a mask, and then the woman without the mask heard it and went up to her and deliberately coughed all over her.

Human stupidity never fails to amaze me.

You are correct, if we look at the number of tests in the time when we had 20-25 new infections per day, they were doing around 5000 tests a day. Today they are doing double the tests, close to 10k a day. So in reality the number of new infections hasn't increased in real terms, numbers have double because tests have doubled (and the fact taht anybody that wishes to do a test, can do so free of charge, which was not the case before)
You're implying that every cohort of 5k has the same infection rate and therefor the same test-positive rate. I disagree.

The people with symptoms who seek hospital treatment have by far the highest test-positive rate. They're among the first 5k and will lift the average of that group. The 2nd 5k don't have a significant number of hospitalised infected among them, so their rate will be significantly lower, the same must apply to their test-positive rate. Of course the average will be somewhere between those two rates.

The conclusion for your scenario, where the average remained roughly flat while the number of tests doubled, is that the rate for the 1st 5k must have increased. Otherwise the average of the 1st and 2nd combined would have been lower.

Arizona orders bars and gyms to close, joining other states in reversing reopening
The move comes on the heels of state reporting nearly 4,000 new Covid-19 cases Sunday, its largest one-day caseload so far.

Does not look so promising?
All Republican states that have rolled back, usually Democratic states approached the reopening more cautiously so they are just delaying their plans if hit by rising numbers.

Re: Coronavirus

In the UK, the first of the local lockdowns is being implemented in Leicester.
I'm not entirely sure how this will be working, as you'd have thought the people from Leicester will just fan out and go shopping in Derby/Nottingham etc, as it's not an Italian/Spanish style lockdown.

Well America has another problem, mostly in democratic states where BLM/ANTIFA protests are allowed, which allows the Covid-19 to spread more rapidly.

Well so far the fastest Covid-19 growth is in Republican States, leaders are Arizona, Texas and Florida.

It is primarily black people who are protesting.
They mostly vote Democrat.
So cities with large black populations are, not surprisingly, Democratic.

Despite Trump claims that the protests are ANTIFA driven there is, as yet, little evidence to support this. For example, how many of the arrested are ANTIFA members, I assume you know this?

Whereas Federal prosecutors charged an Air Force sergeant Steven Carrillo with police murder.
Federal officials claimed Carrillo was associated with the far-right “Boogaloo” movement and took advantage of an unrelated Black Lives Matter protest in the city on the same day as cover.

Re: Coronavirus

Anyone knows about updates for EU travel restrictions?

The current restrictions to travel to EU (Schengen) were set on June 11thh. https://ec.europa.eu/info/live-work-travel-eu/health/coronavirus-response/travel-and-transportation-during-coronavirus-pandemic/travel-and-eu-during-pandemic_en#exemptions-from-travel-restrictions

The relevant part for foreign citizens with residence in Switzerland is the following:

Quote:
In the Communication of 11 June, the Commission recommended that for those countries where no decision has been taken to end the temporary travel restriction for non-essential travel into the EU after 30 June, the exemptions should be amended as follows:
  1. EU citizens and citizens of Schengen Associated States and third country nationals legally residing in the European Union, as well as their family members, should be exempted from the travel restriction, regardless whether or not they are returning home. Member States can, however, take appropriate measures such as requiring such persons to undergo self-isolation or similar measures upon return from a third country for which the temporary restriction on non-essential travel is maintained, provided they impose the same requirements on their own nationals;
My interpretation from the quoted part is that third country nationals with residence permit can travel to and from third countries without any restriction starting tomorrow July 1st. But, that's from June 11th, anyone knows if there's a press conference later today to confirm this or new info?

PS. this is the main topic on this thread. I'll answer and update there if I find information later today https://www.englishforum.ch/swiss-po...ml#post3195290

It is not only Black people that are protesting and rioting. People from all races and backgrounds is a part of it.

Science tells us that there are two main routes of transmission of the COVID-19.
Through contact or droplets. Droplets are generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
During a protest people are close together in large groups and the risk is way higher for contact and droplets spreading.
By allowing these BLM protests, they raise the risk of COVID-19 growth within the cities where the protests take place.
Do you deny this?

If you would have followed videos and investigative journalists during these BLM protests and riots, this would have been quite clear for you.
The CHAZ - Chapel Hill Autonomous Zone, is the best example which showcases ANTIFAs partiticipation in these protests.
I recommend you to have a look for yourself. Check out the investigative journalist and write "Andy Ngo". He has done some good showcasing of what's going on in the CHAZ.

I flew from Zurich to New York/EWR on Sunday evening via Swiss Air. The line in economy to check in was very long - at least an hour wait if I had to guess. Luckily, I was checking in with my dog (in a large crate) and someone from the first class desk offered to assist and check us in (they used to have a group/family check in next to first and business class where one could check in with animals but they did away with this recently because of the virus).

Security went very quickly and the airport was fairly empty. Most of the shops and restaurants are closed but a few kiosks selling coffee, water and sandwiches are open. Our plane was only 1/3 full and interestingly, business class was more full than economy.

Re: Coronavirus

The protests coincided with the end of the lockdowns and easing of restrictions in many or most parts of the US (public pools, restaurants, clubs, malls, etc. suddenly being re-opened), so you really can't blame the current surge of new infections in the US on the protests alone. You have to also acknowledge that the easing of restrictions has also played a part. The fact is, the US ended its lockdowns when the numbers were still very, very high. They didn't wait for the numbers to first become quite low, and Trump was encouraging people to protest in States where the governors did not want to end the lockdowns.

Also, if you watch the protests, most or many of them are wearing masks. However, there is a big problem in the US right now with people refusing to wear masks even when they are mandatory. I saw in the news today that some people are now carrying fake cards that say they are exempt from having to wear a mask for medical reasons.

US sees spike in fake mask exemption cards claiming to be from the ‘freedom to breathe agency’

Parcel delivery today. Post-lady asks: "Do you want to sign yourself or should I do it for you". Well, times going back to normal.

I let her sign it as "Einschreiben" has lost it's purpose over the past months.
Not that my signature on this electronic boxes ever looked anything like mine anyway.

I highly doubt that you did Google him, because if you did you would see that Andy Ngo is a conservative independent journalist. Not a right-wing troll.
He testified about the violence coming from ANTIFA at a Congressional hearing yesterday.

Here's a few clips showing off how the ANTIFA instigate violence and destruction when the peaceful part of the BLM just wants to protest:
