I wholeheartedly agree with the hand washing, masks and distancing.
Why do you believe in those measures?

Re: Coronavirus

So now that France is on the UK quarantine list, what happens if I drive from here to the UK for a visit, via the Eurotunnel - do I have to quarantine then?

Must have heard of Koch, Pasteur, people and things like that?

Too bad a good chunk of the world population didn't.

Btw, I have read somewhere that in France for instance they'll ask kids/students to wear masks in school, don't know if it was only a discussion or they'll actually do that. I can't imagine kids of certain ages wearing a mask for so many hours.

In Switzerland we have on average 200 new cases per day and I expect more after everyone returns from holiday, does anyone else here feel a bit "insecure" about their children going to school/kindergarten again?

I believe so.
It has certainly put a spanner the works of our plans to go back to the UK in a couple of weeks.

You donít need to self-isolate if you travel through a non-exempt country and you donít stop in the country.

If you do make a stop, you donít need to self-isolate if:

- no new people get into the vehicle
- no-one in the vehicle gets out, mixes with other people, and gets in again

You do need to self-isolate if you make a stop and:

- new people get into the vehicle, or
- someone gets out of the vehicle, mixes with other people and gets in again
So take all the food you need with you and if you need to go for a wee, find a forest along the way

Here's the BBC News article on it.
France & the Netherlands added to UK's list of countries for quarantine

France is now on the list of countries where the 14 day quarantine measure will be imposed for all visitors, French tourists and
returning British tourists from France to the UK from 4am on Saturday.

It would be possible to drive through France rules below.

"Private vehicles
You don’t need to self-isolate if you travel through a non-exempt country and you don’t stop in the country.

If you do make a stop, you don’t need to self-isolate if:

no new people get into the vehicle
no-one in the vehicle gets out, mixes with other people, and gets in again
You do need to self-isolate if you make a stop and:

someone gets out of the vehicle, mixes with other people and gets in again"

Given the state of most loos in France a forest is by far the better option anyway.

Also, the airport is officially called Basel Mulhouse Freiburg airport, so I wonder what that means for Germans flying to the UK from there cases rising in Switzerland too, so it can't be long until Switzerland is added to the list

Let's hope not. Was hoping to travel in a month's time back to the UK. Does anyone know how quarantine applies if you go back for a few days?

Same as when you go for several days, weeks. Either there is a quarantine or not. Few exceptions apply obviously (crew, diplomatic service etc), but then you only will know when there is a quarantine

Re: Coronavirus

Well at this rate the Duchy of Grand Fenwick could be the last place in Europe where British tourists don't have
to self isolate for 14 days upon their return to the UK.

My sister asked with the authorities, as she's meant to be visting me in a few weeks (suspect Switzerland will almost certainly be added but she may come anyway).

Their answer was "we haven't got a clue". Seeing as how policy is evidently made up on the hoof in the UK, that's not surprising.

Apparently there's 500,000 tourists due to return from France in the next two weeks. Good luck policing that quarantine it's virtually unenforceable and reliant on the obedience of those returning.

My back-of-a-fag packet calculation has Switzerland requiring less than 1700 new cases in the next week to avoid being added to the quarantine list (20 in 100,000), or in other words about 240 new cases per day. Keep an eye on the BAG website, they just reported 268 new cases for yesterday

Given the latest Swiss infection figures, I guess in a few days it won't make any difference.

Yes, it's a clever trap. So you believe in taking precautions against catching the coronavirus. But only to an extent. You don't believe in taking all precautions, especially the one shown to work best.

That doesn't really seem very logical.
