Dog walks if family quarantined?

Not in need right now, but planning ahead.

If one of our family falls sick with flu-like symptoms, we will quarantine ourselves in our home. Our lovely labrador still has to do his business and we have no garden. I can send him to the Hundehort then but worry that it may be too late and Hundehort may/should not accept him.

Too late to buy a house with garden right now. They are all sold out.

Whats the advice, wise people?

Take a short walk, plastic bag on your hand. Avoid everyone! I mean everyone.

Ask someone else to walk him? Or do what Bowlie says.

Perhaps a disposable mask and disposable gloves, short walk.

Re: Dog walks if family quarantined?

It really depends as to how likely you are going to come into close contact with other people while on your walk. It is spread by coughing or sneezing over someone else or by touching contaminated surfaces so think about any communal doors, lift buttons, bins for disposing of dog poo that you need to touch to get doggo outside for his walk. Are there any routes you are less likely to encounter people. Good suggestion already made to put one of the bags over your hand when touching any communal surface. If someone else walks doggo, think about germs could be on the lead/harness

Apparently for every known case of the virus there could be 10 cases of undetected infections. Study says these often-milder cases are, on average, about half as infectious as confirmed ones, but are responsible for nearly 80 percent of new cases. Problem is that just because one person may have really mild effects, someone they pass it on to may have severe symptoms.

And just as I am about to go and collect my post and nespresso box from the mail box, it has just occurred to me that surface could be contaminated as well!

Early morning and late night walks.
And hope your dog's digestion will adapt to that quickly.

Re: Dog walks if family quarantined?

Check if your community has a help scheme, they are popping up all around FB now as well we as some WhatsApp chat groups (also check LiB's EF initiative)

Because if you really were affected by the bug, then I think the best option would be if someone else would walk your dog. Doing the handover at the door and consider enough distance between you people.

I for one, drive to one of the local forest now, there I seldom come across other people and go for walkies there with our dog.

That's why I washed my hands after I picked up my mail.

Re: Dog walks if family quarantined?

Somehow related with this quarantine and stay at home situation..
Yesterday I noticed some new video cameras installed in Rotkreuz, some on main street , some on small streets, between buildings..
Could be this installed to track people.. ?

If so, they're illegal.
Interesting thing to keep an eye on, I'd say.

Re: Dog walks if family quarantined?

Our Valley has a new FB group where many have come forwards to help with child care, shopping, etc, and dog walking. But yes, I would drive to remote woods and walk my dog there- fortunately I don't need to as we have large area, garden and fields, and fields and woods with direct access.

I would prefer to walk closer to home atm too.

I live a stone's throw away from Belp Airport and it is a lovely open space over fields to walk a doglet....but alas, now overcrowded with dog owners I haven't seen since I live here......

I presume some of them took their dogs to work or the dogs were in kennels/dogsitter during their work hours and now the owners work from home and walk them here during day time....before I could go on a walk over said fields and never ever crossing someone else's path or at most saw someone far away in the distance...now it is really overcrowded

Hence why I prefer to drive further away to spots that are not so overcrowded now.

Consult the fellow EFers on the EF Community Corona Helpline, I'm certain that somebody can take care of that.

Even the lockdown in Italy allows for Gassi-gehen.

I would be so happy to take anyone’s dog for a walk here, as long as we’re still allowed out, but Melancholie would probably correctly point out that I need all sorts of documentation, training, insurance etc. (meant that kindly and informatively MC ).

Anyhow, live in Kreis 6, have grown-up with dogs (that sounds a little weird), but haven’t been able to have one since 2 decades due to professional and personal constrictions. But I love the little critters, and so if anyone finds themselves in a situation in the Zurich Oberstrasse area, would love to help-out with daily walks (as long I can still go Gassi-gehen as well). Oh dear, that sounds even weirder. I mean, as long as there are no restrictions placed on going-out. Of course with-out cost.

I would however make the limitation that I keep the dog on the lead.

So something to add to the thread: https://www.englishforum.ch/daily-li...-helpline.html

If you yearn to walk a dog, I can lend you mine. It's a small bulldog with a heart of gold but she always needs to be on a leash as she's over-protective and jealous, hence dashes at pretty much anything furry that moves.

This.

I took mine out today to our usual trail at the usual time, where normally I wouldn't see a single soul. Today the trail was crowded, mostly children without parents.

I really feel for the kids. Without school, without their normal parks and activities, living in the typical shoebox flats without any green or outoor play space that are common for young families here, the only option for some exercise is the trails.

But it means that we dog walkers will have to be a bit more careful. Children don't understand '2 Meter Abstand', especially when they are excited and want to pet the nice doggie.

(Fortunately nobody wants to pet Robin Goodfellow. )

Will go out at crack o' dawn tomorrow...

I already offered this service to neighbours in case of need.

Another thing, our local SPA is apparently still open for boarding according to their website during this period, so something like that should be available near you as well.

Oh yes!!! She would have to keep-up with daily power walks of around 1.5 hours, so allow around 3 for all the sniffing, peeing and pooing. Not that many dog-walkers if I time it right, but if I’m wearing shorts when the the weather really heats up, might be a problem.

PM me if interested - I am!

Re: Dog walks if family quarantined?

Where we live, 10am was very quiet. Our dog is very old so its not a very long walk. People seem to be giving each other a wide berth, thankfully. So far. Evening seems to be ok, as well.
