Question for sewers and scientists:

I've been making masks out of cotton fabric which, while a tight weave, is still a less than efficient barrier. As I was rummaging around in my sewing basket I found some sheets of fusible - that is, iron-in - interfacing, the stuff you'd use on collars and cuffs.

I was thinking about using the interfacing to add an additional layer/barrier to the mask, but then it hit me: I have no idea what fusible interfacing is made of, and thus whether it would be safe to breathe through.

So anyone know if fusible interfacing is OK to use in a mask?

Many thanks.
I assume you mean the iron-on type? An answer from my professional seamstress mother:

"Iron-on interfacing is a non-woven fabric that is very suitable and even recommended as a middle layer for a mask. On a mask with a seam down the front, it is recommended that the interfacing be cut only to the seam line so you don't end up with a lot of bulk... and that is the seam line of the center front. It's okay to go all the way to the edges on the other sides. It is safe to breathe through. Lightweight is easier to work with if you have it."

HTH

Re: Face Masks

Someone else that I know who’s making masks is also using interfacing. Not sure that it’s the fusible kind, but it seems to be a reasonable idea (says the person who can’t sew).

I guess if you can wash collars with interfacing, you can wash masks with it....although, you probably need to wash at 60 degrees. Does interfacing hold up at these temps?

Asked, awaiting answer.

Answer:
"It will stand up to 60C, higher is probably not necessary unless it's for a medical professional. The rubber in the elastic it won't last very long when subjected to the higher temperatures. I would recommend hanging to dry instead of using the tumble dryer, especially if using fabric that is not pre-shrunk and/or if using interfacing. .it will make the face mask a wrinkled mess. If you've seen the posts about using the microwave to sterilize, don't, especially if you've inserted something metal to help form the nose area."

I imagine the short band with buttons to hold the elastic must be a real help.

Re: Face Masks

Updates from the face mask front.

The BAG/FOPH now states https://www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home...te-fragen.html
Quote:
Do I have to use a mask on the train, bus or tram if I cannot keep the distance of 2 meters?
It is not necessary to wear a hygiene mask in lightly manned public transport. You should wear a hygiene mask during rush hours.

The Federal Office of Transport BAV is currently preparing a corresponding protection concept.
Not yet in the English version of the FAQ. Translated with deepl.com

Canton of Zurich and the Federation each ordered a production machine in China for FFP2 masks for a total of 80k per week. There seems to be a problem with shipping those two machines.
The machines have arrived and should be ready for production mid of May.

Tempted with these re-usables made in Geneva.. It's a non-profit and employs some people who were displaced from their jobs.

10.- per mask .. they say it can be washed up to 100 times and 95 degrees..

The washing is not necessarily even needed for normal home use unless you want to reuse the mask straight away. Leave the mask untouched for at least 3 days and preferably in the sun and there will be no live viable virus left. Just wash after several uses that way for normal cleaning.

Can do the same with reusable masks as well. Perfectly acceptable for home use - going to shops, trains, whatever. I know many people with immune problems that have been advised so by their doctors.

Hospital / care home would be something else...

They talk of "saliva" on that web, somebody should proofread for them. And make a better interface. But it is a lovely effort. Affordable. I might sign in, as a seamstress.

Anyways, those folks you linked are awesome! Just the graphics that hurts my eyeballs but it makes the lack of biz thinking even more endearing and urgent.

Re: Face Masks

Anyone know if the recent, new big distributions of masks coming right away are ffp2 or ffp3 masks (that protect you from others) or just surgical masks (that mainly protects others from you) ??

https://www.thelocal.ch/20200422/cor...on-masks-a-day

Anyone know if any other modes of new production and availability of ffp2 and ffp3 has jumped for the average population in any meaningful way recently for CH .... or is all the recent big efforts (shipments from china, makers within CH, etc) mainly for the surgical mask type which mostly just protects others from you ??

I'm wondering if anyone has seen more detail in local language presses that I haven't yet come across.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Make A Big Wish

There’s nothing wrong with the use of ‘saliva’ nor the interface in my opinion.
For something they’ve pulled together rather quickly in several languages I think they’ve made a decent job of it.

Re: Face Masks

I noticed this in the news, dated April 20th...

60% of Swiss support face mask regime

https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/covid-1...egime/45701902

"Three-fifths of respondents in a nationwide survey have said they are in favour of the mandatory wearing of protective masks in public in an effort to stem the spread of Covid-19.

So far, the government has not recommended that the population wear protective masks, but as the country prepares to enter a phase of lifting protective measures, which means more open shops and public spaces, the question is coming up again and again."

I have a friend currently living in Thailand, and the situation there has quickly become under control. It's being attributed to the fact that most people wear masks there (including home-made masks). It's really a shame that there is a shortage here, as I think they really can help prevent the spread of the virus. But I suppose the Swiss government finds it difficult to make them mandatory when there is such a shortage of them in the first place.

Easing of Covid-19 restrictions highlights Swiss mask shortage

Re: Face Masks

Thanks John, i’ve ordered to packages of masks from SwissMasks.

I don’t think a mandate is coming, but I am going to be more comfortable if I’m wearing one. I’m at least 3 x high risk.

If nothing else I’m helping people otherwise affected by the virus.
