Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

We are looking at moving back to Switzerland from overseas (we are Swiss) and I'm trying to research all of the things that would impact our financial budget if we were to make the move - one of them being we have 3 kids that will be needing braces/dental work if we moved back.

I've been trying to find out what is covered by insurance/what you pay out of pocket, but does anyone know offhand how much you have to pay for dental visits roughly for Kids in Switzerland? We have 4 - 6,8,11,13

Also if you have to get braces, is there any way to get that covered by insurance or do you need to pay that out of pocket and does anyone have any ballpark figures of how much to expect it would cost per child?

Thanks for letting me know :-)

We are coming from NZ where dental is free for kids under the age of 18 so its a bit of an adjustment for us mentally to be thinking that each visit will cost etc. and how much etc. ;-)

Thanks for the advice :-)

I moved from Dubai and was shocked to find the cost of healthcare in Switzerland (still a lot lower compared to USA). It depends a lot on the insurance package that you have. In my case, my insurance company (Swica) covers 75% of the cost of orthodontics for children.

I also had a dental visit for fixing a decayed tooth. The billed was around CHF 2000 of which 75% was paid by insurance.

I was informed by my HR department that these are well negotiated corporate rates so in the open markets, it may be higher.

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

Unless you can take out dental insurance to cover orthodontics for the children you’ll have to pay for the costs yourself.
You may still be able to get dental cover for the younger two but I very much doubt that you’ll get anything for the older two, especially if it’s known that they’ll need work.

It will depend on what kind of work they need doing, my son’s orthodontic work came in at around 3500chf six years ago but that was a very simple procedure. 75% of the cost was covered by insurance.
You’re generally looking at between 10 and 20 thousand francs per child for braces and orthodontic work here.

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

Might depend from the canton but in mine until 14-15 years old there is the school dentist and costs up to 700 chf are covered.
I don't know if prices for children are different but for adults a first visit with x-ray costs around 420 CHF, normal yearly hygiene around 120 CHF.
Braces run in the thousands. I don't think they're covered except in some cases (e.g. infections).

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

I don't know if it is different per canton but in Bern if you do not have dental insurance there are two scenarios.
1. If the braces are needed due to certain natural defects and are needed for health more than aesthetic reasons this will be covered by the Sozialdienst/Gemeinde for 100%.
2. If the condition does not qualify then normal health insurance covers 50% of the costs. In my case the cost for one child was ca. 12k of which 6k was covered by the health insurance. For the other child it was covered by the Gemeinde. There is also a reduced cost option for some things via the University dental service.

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

Thanks this is really helpful info - do you know if it is cheaper to get orthodontic work done over the border in France or Germany then instead of in Switzerland?

Depending on your income and where you live, your community may contribute to the costs of braces. Mine gaves us 100CHF...

Yes, it's cheaper to get it done across the border.

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

My son (13 yo) needs braces on his bottom teeth. I live close to the German border and so went to Waldshut, DE. The cost is eye-watering: €11000 over a two-year period, including brackets before braces and a retainer after the braces. And this is only for his bottom teeth. I've actually been wondering if I can find something cheaper in Switzerland.

You can only get dental insurance for children when they are around 4-6 years old, and even then you need a certificate / form that a dentist fills out. If it is already clear that your child will need orthodontic work, they will not be approved for the insurance.

I should add that this may be quite different in Vaud; I live in Aargau.

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

@zia2001, are you sure you are not covered for 50% by normal health insurance. My understanding is that health insurance policies are standard across Switzerland. I was already paying for 6 months before becoming aware of this (at my divorce hearing my ex-wifes lawyer informed me I could claim it...) This could be really worth checking for you - although then you would need a swiss dentist but from what you quoted it sounds the same as what I paid in Bern anyway...

A friend in VD paid for 3 years of braces for her kid - 10 000fr. It is not unusual here.

I have never heard of basic insurance covering 50% of the cost of braces. It’s not mentioned in the standard basic coverage.
Are you sure you didn’t have a supplementary add on?

In some very severe cases, Invalidity Insurance can pay for the full treatment. But the conditions are very strict and concerns a very small minority of children.

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

The prices you folks mention seem incredibly high to me. My 3 kids had braces, and we always had supplementary insurance (which costs around Fr. 10/mo for kids). With the coverage of the basic insurance plus the supplementary, we only had to pay around 30% of each bill, which throughout the 2 years of treatment amounted (each) to around Fr. 8500 or so.

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

Earlier in this thread someone posted that there's a cut-off point for age (for dentristy, only small children can be insured, after which it is too late), and that that children with pre-existing conditions would be excluded. Can anyone provide OP with more details on that, please?

  1. How old were your children when you took out supplementary insurance for dentistry for them?
  2. Was it clear, when you bought this insurance, that they would need braces?
Thank you.

We have our kid at KPT and took out the maximum extra dental insurance at birth for about 20,- a month. pretty normal is that around the time kids come at Kita age they also start having their first controls and treatments and insurance start wanting to see X-rays. I know that Sanitas wants to see a full report and x-rays done in January of the yr in which the kid becomes 7 (but anything to be found pre-existing is likely to be excluded) and I've not read about more relaxed insurances. So I'm afraid unless there's a medical need that OP has to bring a decent bunch of cash to get it all fixed.

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

We paid an additional insurance of 30 Fr a month from birth that covered 75% of the cost of braces, some 11k for our son.

When we left we did a pause on that extra insurance and showed a policy with an equivalent cover abroad, called a "Sistierung" with Helsana in German. That will be reinstated when we return. Basically, insurers have to cover you on what policy you had elsewhere. The same when we entered Australia - the waiting period was waived on orthodontics because of our Swiss policy. Dig up all the info on your current insurance and send this to your future Swiss insurer for clarification. We showed the previous policy and online links to what that policy included.

Hope that helps.

That sounds very good. I've never heard of any such obligation... could you please provide a link? Thanks.

A bit of a late reply but now that you mention it, it could very likely have been from the supplemental insurance. I think it was only about 10chf/mth extra per child so I always had this.

Re: Cost of dental visits and braces for children in Vaud?

Our insurance (CSS) required kids to be insured before the age of three. When we missed that date, we had to provide a statement from a dentist that no work needed to be done at the time. Since dad had braces as a kid, we went ahead with that and are glad we did. - Dental care is explicitly excluded from basic health insurance in Switzerland, so I assume it must‘ve been a Zusatzversicherung. Unlike for basic health insurance, the insurance companies are free to define the terms of these non-compulsory insurances. The age limit may be different with another Krankenkasse.
