Where to go with 2 kids for a few days in Switzerland?

Dear friends,

I am living in Zurich, my kids are coming to me for a few days in August. Could you please share your ideas on where to go with them? Are there some exciting family activities in Switzerland? Maybe something like PGL family camps in the UK where one can do organised sports activities with kids together?

Many thanks for your help!

It may help to mention how old your kids are.

Re: Where to go with 2 kids for a few days in Switzerland?

Depending on how you feel about the situation with the coronavirus, here are a few things that I can suggest from personal experience (sorry if not all of them are feasible for you):

1. Europa Park in Rust, Germany. It's a large amusement park that is good for all ages and is a roughly 2-hour drive from Zurich. I think you do have to wear a mask everywhere in Germany right now, though (at least as an adult and over a certain age). Europa Park is a lot of fun, though -- lots of rides that kids that age would probably like (roller coasters, etc.).

2. Camping. If you don't have a tent, you can rent a small chalet at most campgrounds. We really like the Vintzau campground on Lake Lucerne for short camping trips. It's only a one-hour drive from Zurich and has a nice pool and there is also a path that goes down to a nice beach area on the lake. You do have to reserve in advance at that campground, though. If camping is something you'd consider, we do have a large tent that you're welcome to borrow.

3. A day trip at the lake (Lake Greifensee or Lake Zurich, etc.). I live in Greifensee, so that is the lake that I know the best. There are lots of swimming areas all around the lake -- many with grills, etc. We really like the Seebad Furren beach area on Greifensee. It has a restroom, shower, changing area, grill, etc. and a large floating raft that you can swim out to.

https://www.badi-info.ch/furren.html

Lake Greifensee is very clean, but I do suggest using the shower after swimming.

Europapark? About as Swiss an experience as going to the malls in Mendrisio.

If they like to be outdoors and can walk/hike/climb a bit, take them to Braunwald or Engelberg for a hike, a "Klettersteig" and a swim in the lake and a barbecue afterwards. I am sure there are guided activities as well - check the tourist sites.

Zermatt? The new gondola up to the Klein Matterhorn is a real experience, as is the GornegrattBahn. From Zurich there is a direct train to Visp with a short connection to Zermatt.

Our kids (of similar age) would find this a terrible proposition. Sitting on a train (with a mask on) for three and a half hours to then get into a gondola for another say 30 minutes (with a mask on) to look at mountains ... and then all the way back.

Apparently, no matter what someone suggests here, komsomolez is going to try to find a problem with it.

I did not try. I did.

Didn't mean to offend. I just had lots of difficulty motivating our kids to do "cool stuff" and I learned my lessons for sitting them in transport for too long.

I'm not offended. But the OP didn't specify that she or he was looking for a "Swiss experience." So I included Europa Park in my suggestions after seeing the kids' ages, even though Europa Park is not in Switzerland (but is also not terribly far, depending on where in CH you're located). My 8-year old and his friends love Europa Park. I'm not entirely sure that anywhere that is very crowded is a good idea right now, though, but I guess that's a subjective decision at this point. I think it's also rather subjective in terms of where kids that age might have fun.

Re: Where to go with 2 kids for a few days in Switzerland?

Alpamare springs to mind. It is a waterpark and you're only allowed in, if you have a proper reservation (because of Corona).
Then, there are some very nice public lake baths, with good food and fun to be had by everyone.
Depending on what your kids are into, you can also show them the runway by the ZH airport, one of the few places on earth, where you can get so close to airport facilities. A short hike up the Uetliberg is also fun. You could possibly do all 3 activities in one day, Start up with Uetliberg, stop by the runway and end your day at a pool by the lake.

True. I had the impression though that the kids do not live in Switzerland and just come to visit their parent. I would want my kids to see/do something proper Swiss*, if I were in this situation.

I would want my kids to have a pleasant experience. If the experience happens to be something Swiss, then so be it.

Re: Where to go with 2 kids for a few days in Switzerland?

Take a train to Bern, see the bears, run around a bit and check yourself to the Bernaqua hotel. OP gets a massage and sauna specials while the kids have fun in the pools/river-ride/cinematic & underwater lights pool, etc. And a hotdog & fries. Success guaranteed. Next trip can be a hike in a cool mountain area (there are neat acrobranche parks all over CH) and then off to the lake and rent a paddle board & bbq.

The bear pit is lame and Bernaqua is super lame.
For the money spent traveling to Burn, you might as well stay in Zurich and go to the zoo.

Not really on-topic but how come for the past week or so, the new threads do not appear on the 'Home' page? I have been seeing the same old thread with outdated last posts for quite a few days now. Is it only me?

The question wasn’t about a day trip from Zurich, it was about ‘a few days’.

Bern is even more awesome now without tourists

As per money spent travelling - well, it seems that OP doesn't see his kids so often, they will appreciate the investments and lush Swiss trains. Museum of communication is awesome in Bern.

Another thing is 11-16 are hard ages to please together. Except aquaparks and acrobranche! Camping/family activities might be a bit blah for the 16 yr old.

Re: Where to go with 2 kids for a few days in Switzerland?

Many thanks for your answers and suggestions, I am very grateful! Personally, I do not like roller coaster parks, but children adore them, and I am not sure if they would have a lot of enthusiasm for camping or train tours. I decided to split it between Europa, Seilpark in Zurich and swimming in the lake if the weather permits.

BTW, my 11 y/o daughter will remain with me in Zurich. She'll be happy to meet new friends and do some sport or hiking activities on one of the weekends. Please feel free to get in touch if you have English-speaking children of similar age.

Thanks!

Bern is boring and should be banned. All I'm saying, that if one were to fork out train money for the bear pit, one might as well just head to the zoo in ZH.
