Adoption from abroad

I am Swiss-Jordanian, and my husband and I recently adopted a child in Jordan. Since Jordan is not a signatory to The Hague Convention, the adoption is not automatically official in Switzerland.

Does anyone know what I would need to do to officially adopt our child in Switzerland and give him Swiss citizenship?

Any advice would be welcome, including recommendations for legal support in this matter.

This should help get you started:

There's a PDF in English but the details are only in German, French and Italian.

I would also contact the Swiss embassy/consulate in Jordan to see what advice they may be able to give you.

Re: Adoption from abroad

Did you check with Swiss authorities about this before or you basically went to Jordan and adopted a child?
In the latter case I would suggest you to contact them asap, because AFAIK, Switzerland does not recognise international adoptions unless you went through them first (i.e. you fulfilled all the requirements to be able to adopt, you requested it and you received a permission to adopt).

Think the OP is a dual citizen and lives in Jordan. Think OP just wants to pass on their Swiss citizenship if poss.

Ah, I see - in that case my comment is less relevant (I think that Switzerland enforces their adoption requirements on residents).

Re: Adoption from abroad

I have just gone through adoption of my step daughter from abroad.
It was a horrendous process. The Swiss Embassy in Thailand was absolutely incompetent: They wasted months of time, did not respond to emails or phone calls, requested wrong documents, lost documents I sent, did incorrect procedures, even sent my documents to the wrong Swiss office. A process that should have lasted 3 weeks took them more than 8 months.

After that was a 2 month fight with the Cantonal adoption office in Chur to get the adoption recognized as a "full" adoption. Even thought all requirements of the Hague Convention on Adoption were fulfilled, the Chur people "decided" that was a "simple adoption"- meaning that my step daughter cannot get Swiss citizenship! At this point I am convinced that the adoption office here purposely came to this conclusion just to avoid giving her Swiss citizenship.

As Jordon is not a member of the Hague Convention, I am guessing that you will have a large struggle to get the adoption done at all.

I strongly suggest that you get a Swiss lawyer with strong background in foreign adoption to help you.
