Body fat/Muscle mass value on bathroom scale

So the last few months I've been taking better care of myself. When the gyms reopened I was excited to start a new chapter. I bought one of these bathroom scales that measures your muscle mass etc. It only cost 18 euro as far as I can remember. Anyway, I decided to see how I compare vs May and found I'd actually lost muscle mass.

This was really quite demoralising as I've been very consistent, training hard eating a lot of good healthy food etc. I even considered all the other factors people often ask. I have been sleeping well, I have been getting enough protein etc etc.

Has anyone else used these types of scales? I understand they're probably not great when compared to more expensive ones, but I thought as both measurements were taken with the same scale I'd at least see a positive direction in the values.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in the results you are seeing on the scale and would focus more on what you see in the mirror and how you are feeling. It sounds like you are doing all the right things, so continue with the great efforts, I’m positive that it will definitely pay off!

Agree. Ignore the numbers but use the scale to track it over time. Super hydration will also help, I have seen results improve with drinking 4 to 6 liters of water a day, not sure how this works but it will reduce hunger so that could be the answer but make sure you have a toilet app map as you will need them!

Wow. A toilet app map?

Wish those existed a few years back for baby changing stations.

My wife bought a set of those scales at the beginning of lock-down.

They were a lot more than 18 euros. If you stand on them on your birthday, the display shows "Happy Birthday!" and has a little display of fireworks.

I suspect that's why they were a lot more than 18 euros.

They have existed for quite a while now both for toilets and baby change facilities.

Re: Body fat/Muscle mass value on bathroom scale

I have a Withings Body+, which measures weight (duh), body muscle %, body fat %, bone %, water % and obviously calculates BMI. This is a top-of-the-range model, and its measurements have some glitches that can't really mean anything. For example, just yesterday I measured myself right before biking, after biking, and this morning. The biking was a 1.5-hour bike ride at >28km/h on a flat path, including a short ca. 30min. mountain bike section. The app shows this:

Supposedly I lost and recovered 3% body fat in a 12-hour period. On the same screen, my BMI barely changed at all.

So take it with a grain of salt, OP.

I think there must be a market for the good news weighing scales. They would read your mind before you stand on them and then come up with a suitable analysis.
"Not bad considering you didn't make it to to gym and had six pints on Friday night. Try to improve this week"
Has to be winner.

Re: Body fat/Muscle mass value on bathroom scale

My neighbour's got scales that speak your weight - quite useful for him as he probably can't read the LCD display over his stomach.

When he bought them, the first time he tried them out, he stood on them, kept still for a few moments and then it spoke to him, "One at a time please!"

Re: Body fat/Muscle mass value on bathroom scale

I have had the Fitbit for a while but did not look at body fat much until recently where by mistake I told it I was the hubster and suddenly had 15% points less fat. That made me wonder if they really measure or throw out random numbers?

Being serious for a second, they are useful to show a trend in weight/fat loss/gain where a blip one week doesn't really matter.

Just out of interest, I experimented to see if I could lower my body fat percentage over a few weeks by eating less and more healthily and taking more exercise - sure there was a downward trend in body-fat percentage and weight.

I then spent a couple of weeks eating cakes and biscuits etc and generally a lot more food and my weight and body-fat percentage went up pretty sharpish.

Not sure what that proves though - you don't need expensive scales to know that you're eating too much cr*p.

Re: Body fat/Muscle mass value on bathroom scale

Seriously as someone who obsesses too much as a male as how my body looks and want to know body fat % you can use body fat callipers they are super accurate

Or you can just look in the mirror it is super cheap and does not lie

Yes, I have one of those Withings fancy scales but I know what it is going to tell me before stepping on there ...

Honestly the mirror is the best gauge of fitness and health also what parts of your body are lagging and maybe need some focus
