Re: Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

We wanted to get married in Switzerland but it was the hassle of having to provide original documents including a recently issued birth certificate (!) that I didn't have and couldn't easily obtain; that then had to be translated into German and notarised for our local authorities that made it all too hard at the time. And the cost of flying family and friends into Switzerland to attend was prohibitive. Instead, we did an online application in my OH's home country (UK), spent 2 weeks "living" in the UK with family to meet the UK requirements, then did the deed in a local registry office. Flew our Swiss friends to the UK for the event and saved a fortune having the party there, voila! Maybe you could just go back to Sweden to get the deed done on the cheap?

Trip to Sweden during a pandemic. Sounds like fun.

Re: Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

I’ve been in Sweden since March, minus 1 week to CH in June for an important family thing (as opposed to my usual CH/UK/Sweden rotation) - daily life feels no different than in a non-pandemic time.

To the OP, if your main incentive is saving money go local and have everything officially recognised from the start in CH. We got married 25 yrs ago in Sweden (Swede/US couple) and are still occasionally digging for the official marriage document and translation.

Dear Expats,

My girlfriend and I currently live in Switzerland. I am Swedish (EU), she is American (Non-EU). We are both currently graduate students in Basel. We decided we wanted to get married so that she can apply for jobs and internships in Switzerland without being restricted by any job quotas. My understanding is that I would apply for a family reunification permit for her. We both don't want to spend any more than we need to for the marriage and just need whatever is the minimum legal requirements so that she can get her permit.

Anyway, I got a quote for getting a marriage ceremony in Basel in the registry office for about 400 CHF. Could we save more money if we get married in Germany or some other EU country? Does anyone have any recommendations on the cheapest place to have a legal marriage outside of Switzerland?

Thanks!
Graduate students... getting married and entering into a lifelong legally binding agreement for purely economical purposes... what could possibly go wrong?

I bet your older future self wishes he could time travel back to speak to your younger self.

It actually totally makes sense, otherwise the position of the non-EU partner is much weaker. Remember that many people from mixed nationalities in foreign countries have to get married in order to have a life together.

Yeah but this is together and then some, considering the open relationship.

Many things make sense in the moment, the position of the non-EU partner may also be weaker many years later if a couple does not, or is not able, to establish a balance between their origins (family, opportunities etc)

Yeah, that's why it's idiotic. Everything's normal, if you ignore the 5800+ dead people nobody cares to protect.

I suppose I'm an outlier because I believe in protecting the vulnerable.

If you have cancer, the insurance will pay for drugs to extend life by mere months. I know as I've had several people in my extended family get these expensive cancer drugs that extend life by as little as 3 month on average. This is enough time to settle your affairs, no more.

Using Sweden's logic on this, we should just euthanise cancer patients that have less than 5 years to live since their deaths are inevitable.

The average 80 year old in Europe has about 8 years left. Do we just kill them off because their lives are worthless?

I see Sweden a lot clearer now. There's going to be a slew of long term chronic illness coming as a result of covid.

Re: Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

Your life is here now, so you may as well marry here rather than try to save afew hundred francs. Just marry her in Basel. It may be cheaper in Germany or elsewhere, but by the time you pay for the travel, witnesses expenses (if any) certificates that you're not already married etc etc, and then to have all the documentation certified and legalized, it will be quicker and cheaper in the end to do it in Basel.

This is a very typical character trait in people with any kind of more extreme views. They consider themselves "apart from the herd", one of the few brave people who "dare to contemplate" tough outcomes.

In reality, by even talking about "pruning" a vulnerable population during a pandemic you are just you are just displaying some signs of psychopathic character. A certain famous someone in recent history also thought it would be good to prune the old, vulnerable or disabled...

Protection of the most vulnerable in society, especially the elderly who have already paid their dues throughout their lives, is the difference between a truly civilized and humane society and one that isn't.

How did COVID even get shoehorned into a marriage thread?

Re: Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

Someone suggested getting married in Sweden.

A 66 year old 2nd cousin of mine with diabetes died two months ago in Gothenburg from "pneumonia". His ex-wife and both kids made it sound as if it was inevitable. My husband's 75 year old uncle had cancer surgery in Switzerland last month. Nobody thinks his death is inevitable.

Just be aware that itís still really hard to get a job even married to a Swiss. My American qualifications donít count here. The Swiss Masters Iím doing counts for a bit but most positions Iíve applied for also wanted something else. Of course Iím in teaching, so along with law I imagine, one of the areas with the least crossover between countries. Just to say, donít think that a marriage license will necessarily solve the difficulties of finding a position.

A dentist friend of ours met an American dentist and they married, she taking his name. She was a leading specialist in her field but could not work in her husband's studio until she had qualified in Switzerland. At university she kept questioning the professors interpretation of the book he was teaching from as well as some of his methods - being the only non-Swiss and female he tended to look down on her. In exasperation after a while he retorted sarcastically "You know it all, I suppose you wrote the book", and she replied "as a matter of fact I did"!

After that she was the one mainly leading the lectures which shows how ridiculous the Swiss system is in not recognizing qualifications from other countries.

Hello!

How hard is the process of recognition in Switzerland of marriage done abroad (Non-Eu and Non-Eu, both living on residence permit) and how long can it take?
