Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

Dear Expats,

My girlfriend and I currently live in Switzerland. I am Swedish (EU), she is American (Non-EU). We are both currently graduate students in Basel. We decided we wanted to get married so that she can apply for jobs and internships in Switzerland without being restricted by any job quotas. My understanding is that I would apply for a family reunification permit for her. We both don't want to spend any more than we need to for the marriage and just need whatever is the minimum legal requirements so that she can get her permit.

Anyway, I got a quote for getting a marriage ceremony in Basel in the registry office for about 400 CHF. Could we save more money if we get married in Germany or some other EU country? Does anyone have any recommendations on the cheapest place to have a legal marriage outside of Switzerland?

Thanks!

Get married in Germany or France and then get her here?
That said, if you are getting married, you may want to make it special.... :-)

I can't really comment on wheter your plan works or not, but I got married in Italy (As a swiss with a swiss wife). If I remember correctly, we paid most fees double. Depending on the contracts language and how proficient you are in it, you will need a translator.

Re: Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

Thanks for the advice.

So I assume there would be some fees we would have to pay if we wanted to register a marriage from outside Switzerland? I did see that doing it in Italy could be cheaper, and it would not be too difficult to get there, but if it is a huge hassle or costs more than 400 CHF, it probably wouldn't be worth it. Does anyone know how much it costs to register a marriage from outside of Switzerland?

given the paperwork requirements that you might find elsewhere in neighbouring countries, it would likely be cheapest, quickest and easiest to marry in Switzerland given you're both resident here.

We paid less than CHF 200 for getting married at the town hall, including flowers.

Re: Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

Getting married in Germany costs around EUR 175 or more (depends on day of week). https://www.freundin.de/was-kostet-e...tliche-trauung
That is just the cost on the German side.

A discount from the usual CHF 300 - 400 in Switzerland. But, you still have to get the marriage recognized in Switzerland. Which can incur more costs and lost time.

A lot of the Swiss cost is for the marriage permit (around CHF 150). If the Germans authorities request one from your place of residence, you will have to bear that cost and you would save nearly nothing at all.
http://www.bj.admin.ch/dam/data/bj/g...slandehe-d.pdf

Apparently the Las Vegas of Europe is Denmark. The marriage alone costs around EUR 225 or even less. But you have to travel there and have to organize all yourself in advance.

Haha thanks. My girlfriend and I agreed to do a marriage with all assets before and during the marriage kept separate so even if we did divorce at some point, it shouldn't be catastrophic. We are polyamorous anyway so it is more of a formality 🙂.

Not sure the swiss authorities want to hear this. Those vows are quite intimidating if you take them seriously. With their trying to clamp down on marriages of convenience, I would keep as quiet as possible

Re: Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

I thought you could do a Vegas wedding by registered mail?

Maybe even by Zoom these days?

(Covid and all that are your friends)

And then spend a mountain getting it recognized?

I do not think so. Maybe a group discount is more likely these days.

OP, we did it in an Eastern Eu country, wasn't expensive, a fraction of here way back and I had all officially translated there, notarized and appostilled which came cheaper than here too. But that was way back and no longer valid. To be honest, avoid the fatigue and headache from long distance maneuvres and logistics and just do it here. I'd like to congratulate you anyways, to the milestone event X

Don't want to rain on your parade - but check first that you are able to get a family reunication permit for her as a student. As far as I know you will only be granted it, if you can show enough resources financially. Check if these are granted for students. I am not sure.

So much for the sanctity of marriage. And who says romance is dead..
