Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

Dear Expats,

My girlfriend and I currently live in Switzerland. I am Swedish (EU), she is American (Non-EU). We are both currently graduate students in Basel. We decided we wanted to get married so that she can apply for jobs and internships in Switzerland without being restricted by any job quotas. My understanding is that I would apply for a family reunification permit for her. We both don't want to spend any more than we need to for the marriage and just need whatever is the minimum legal requirements so that she can get her permit.

Anyway, I got a quote for getting a marriage ceremony in Basel in the registry office for about 400 CHF. Could we save more money if we get married in Germany or some other EU country? Does anyone have any recommendations on the cheapest place to have a legal marriage outside of Switzerland?

Thanks!

Get married in Germany or France and then get her here?
That said, if you are getting married, you may want to make it special.... :-)

I can't really comment on wheter your plan works or not, but I got married in Italy (As a swiss with a swiss wife). If I remember correctly, we paid most fees double. Depending on the contracts language and how proficient you are in it, you will need a translator.

Re: Recommendation for how to get married as cheaply as possible in or around Basel

Thanks for the advice.

So I assume there would be some fees we would have to pay if we wanted to register a marriage from outside Switzerland? I did see that doing it in Italy could be cheaper, and it would not be too difficult to get there, but if it is a huge hassle or costs more than 400 CHF, it probably wouldn't be worth it. Does anyone know how much it costs to register a marriage from outside of Switzerland?

given the paperwork requirements that you might find elsewhere in neighbouring countries, it would likely be cheapest, quickest and easiest to marry in Switzerland given you're both resident here.

We paid less than CHF 200 for getting married at the town hall, including flowers.

Graduate students... getting married and entering into a lifelong legally binding agreement for purely economical purposes... what could possibly go wrong?

I bet your older future self wishes he could time travel back to speak to your younger self.

It actually totally makes sense, otherwise the position of the non-EU partner is much weaker. Remember that many people from mixed nationalities in foreign countries have to get married in order to have a life together.

Yeah but this is together and then some, considering the open relationship.

Many things make sense in the moment, the position of the non-EU partner may also be weaker many years later if a couple does not, or is not able, to establish a balance between their origins (family, opportunities etc)
