Single Parent working and Family allowance

Hello Everyone,
A friend of mine is doing his PhD and living in Basel with his wife and 3 childern. He is the only person working as his wife have to look after three kids.
Now question is:
1. Is he eligible for any family support as he has very limited income ?

2. Is there any specific criteria /formula for this kind of support?(relavent authority or office).

Looking forward for valuable feedback.
Regards

Re: Single Parent working and Family allowance

About CHF200/child/month, depends on the canton.

Re: Single Parent working and Family allowance

Your friend should already get the family allowance 'Kinderzulagen' paid out through their employer.

With low income they will be eligible for health insurance premium reductions for the whole family: https://www.asb.bs.ch/krankenversich...billigung.html

Then it would be possible to calculate if any other social help is available: https://www.wsu.bs.ch/sozialleistung...nen.html?start

Although it should be said that receiving social help could negatively influence the application for a C-permit in the future.

The university of Basel seems to have an office for advice on social help who could advise your friend on all these issues: https://www.unibas.ch/de/Studium/Ber...lberatung.html

Re: Single Parent working and Family allowance

A couple of points...

1. the Kinderzulagen (ca. 200 or 250 per child) are not dependant on income. One (and only) one working parent for each family should receive this, no matter your income.

2. I only know this for Zürich city --> based on income, child care such as afterschool (Hort) is subsidized and day care (Kinderkrippe) can be subsidized as well (but not all day care centers offer subsidized spaces).

3. In Zürich, there are city apartments with quite low rent that are only available to people who meet certain income requirements (the compitition for these is naturally extremely tough and there is no guarentee that you'll receive one).
