So my 6 months of unpaid leave for both Mum and Dad to bond with the kid is a perfect solution
I will make you in charge of implementing the details
Society pays for this, as it makes a better society. It's money well spent.

This will be a bit controversial I guess as I will be in the minority. I was with a Swiss citizen who was filling the recent round of voting questions. Couple of questions got me thinking.

So fathers want 2 weeks PAID holiday after childbirth and parents want more money for kids if I understood correctly? As someone who decided not to have kids I just don't understand!!! If you want to have kids, why should others be paying for it

Did you not think about the consequences? In the dog thread I realized that it is not good idea for me to get a pet dog due to costs for starters. If I still go and get one why would I expect others to pay or contribute for its upkeep?

As for fathers, I think you should be able to take 4 weeks off, not just 2 that you are demanding, but please UNPAID leave only. Your kid, your holiday Ok, don't crucify me
...you have to think that kid probably will pay taxes that will keep you steady when at end of your life you'll struggle to walk without support...

I don't know, society seems to be going downhill.

(Many) fathers also contribute to taxes and hence "do not take something they did not contribute to". No? What is the issue then?
Issue is that it should not be free for all and everything. I want a dog, please pay for it. I want a house, please pay my mortgage! I want a Ducati, please pay for it.

Fine have many grandkids, but why ask society to pay for those grandkids? Again that is your choice, I personally won't have kids or grandkids to change my nappies. Too selfish a reason for me. Also there is no guarantee that all kids would even do that.

I think I contributed enough to my own thread. I am out of these circular argument. Enjoy the vote victory when it comes.

Have you contributed to some sort of a "fund" whose target is to help its members buy a property? Then go for it. Such funds exist in many countries.

The same thing for people who wish to have a dog? I don't know if any such things exist, but of course, your choice.

...if you'll be kids toys designer, you'll speak differently...it's all about selfishness that is occurring more and more in modern society...if you want to help to reduce the global population, you can dedicate your entire life to educate those who multiply ten folds...if you want a dog I can help you to adopt all half million of the dogs that are homeless in Sankt-Peterburg...probably about 6-7 thousand will die this winter...and please don't pay for my kids I don't need...those who have kids will pay for me and vice-versa: I will pay for those with kids...that how society is functioning...

Re: I have to pay for your kids? :-O

This is not about the fathers but about the kids. Those who are against the investment should logically also protest the subsidies in daycare and all the public school funding. Whether there will be some kind of quality control is entirely different question (moms are used to being disciplined by the system, how will dads take it?). But as a woman I don't feel my role threatened by it, it seems logical. It is a fraction of women's investment and a different one, too. (Wish both parents could do the homestretch that women usually do)

It has always been there. Modern times are just highlighting it more.

No I don't care any more, I gave up on the world long time ago. Just a mere observer these days and do bit of banter online World and humans will never change.

Life is tough I already sponsor 2 animal charities, cheaper than owning a dog in Switzerland.

Re: I have to pay for your kids? :-O

In a pure capitalist society (which doesn’t exist, thankfully) one would pay for everything that they, and their families consume. Police, Fire protection, Rubbish collection, Street lights, Water, Sewage, Schooling, National Defense, etc.

But society has decided that some things should be provided by the state with the costs being shared by the people, and in some cases partially by the actual users. For example my water is metered so I pay in accordance with my use. But the costs of installation of the infrastructure was shared. My sewage is not metered so everyone shares equally in those costs. This is a communist, or socialist, system.

Other things like food and clothing (etc.) are our own responsibility. We choose if we want to eat out all the time or make home-cooked meals, if we want second hand clothing or designer lines.

The vote this weekend is about if we want to move Paternity Leave from the Capitalist to the Communist system. As I mentioned above I’m ambivalent as I will not personally will be sharing in the cost. (I actually abstained on this one).

Does the need justify the costs? Paternity Leave is possible under the present system, at a cost to the user. It perhaps is not perfect as employers can now deny leave at times that are not convenient to them. The Construction industry is an example, where the entire sector shuts down at fixed times of the year.

That is the decision for the voters on Sunday.

I had it tough so others should have it tough?
Why not be happy that we improve the society that we live in, also for your 2 kids?

It's less about helping families out, and more about a teeny tiny step in the direction of gender equality. Men should be required to take it, and also sick days related to sick children as well, to just begin to put us on equal footing.

So the lady across the street in her 30s with 4-5 kids is getting rewarded CHF1500 per month for not giving a damn about family planning?

CHF300 per month meets roughly my grocery needs, so hardly chump change. Most here probably spend that amount on one night out.

Given that you need about 2.2 kids each to keep the population up her "family planning" is as close to break even as yours.

Re: I have to pay for your kids? :-O

The relatively small costs for extending paternal leave are not of much consequence to me. I am happy to contribute to the betterment of society, even though I believe far too many children are being brought into this world and I wonder why humans just blindly continue to breed.

Rather than my pocket book, I fear there will be more consequences in the workplace if fathers are taking extended leave in addition to the already offered generous holiday packages. You can't really align work priorities with their wife's due date and I'm sure some issues will arise.
