Re: I have to pay for your kids? :-O

My flat was surrounded by green fields, all gone!!! Construction all the time, what for? What is the aim? To multiply uncontrolled and fill all habitable land? Where does it all stop?

Actually parents should worry about this more than me, it is the future of their kids. I will be gone just like the great Egyptian pharaohs of the past So apart from a good debate and a bit of time filler, I have given up on humanity.

Re: I have to pay for your kids? :-O

I don't want kids, never really have. Still happy to back the two weeks' paternity leave. Why? Women are still automatically seen as a risk to employ because they may get pregnant and be absent. When a kid is sick and has to be sent home, it is still mostly the mother that is called by default - even if instructions to the contrary were given.

Getting these two weeks mandatory paid paid leave is an important step towards more equality and a shift in mindset. So it's a yes from me.

Rather than my pocket book, I fear there will be more consequences in the workplace if fathers are taking extended leave in addition to the already offered generous holiday packages. You can't really align work priorities with their wife's due date and I'm sure some issues will arise.
I don't think people think it through though. Everyone wants more holidays, more money, but somebody will have to do the work and pay more taxes. Kids come with sacrifices. Lots of things come with sacrifices, this is the world we live in.

IMO, equal paternity leave is a no-brainer and should be enforced (not voluntary) as a way having more equality. Particularly for women who are discriminated against in the workplace due to the time they take off work due to pregnancy. Looking in conext, the costs are trivial.

United we stand, divided we fall.

What do you imagine would happen if no more young people joined society, none. Maybe you be alright, cause there is sufficient number of younger people around to support you, but who will be supporting them.

Stop and look around you. Ask yourself how old the policeman are tacking the race riots, the climate enthusiasts, the political protests about whatever.

Take a vacation to somewhere that there isn't sufficient money to have an effective police force see what happens. There was a story on the BBC this morning about two women and their kids who were shot in cold blood by the army in Africa.

A world were there are no more young people would be a dead planet.

It is a small step you could do to chip in to humanity not being given up on. Just a formality, really. Just like asking yourself if the school lunches you are subsidizing are actually worth your money. These little things count...Don't get me started on the poor quality day care food taxes go to or unstimulating uneventful day care in general. Two weeks of dads getting over the trauma from watching birth or being all googly eyed over their brand new babies - it may be just symbolic but it will mean a lot for kids in the long run. Plus some women go through particularly difficult birth and need their partner's support.

Not in the system but I agree with this. Two weeks isn't a lot to ask for someone whose life will never be the same again!

Ok you can have it but what was the issue with 2 weeks unpaid or even 3-6 months unpaid? Maybe work 50% if money is an issue so you can still play and earn?

Their life won't be same again by CHOICE though.

Because most people simply cannot afford the pay cut for those two weeks. I don't see the problem of those two paid weeks tbh. It should be 4 IMO.

Indeed it's a choice but why should folk who want children be financially penalised when they have been paying into a system? It's the same as paid maternity leave. The money is a joke but at least it's something. However if mine had been the sole income we would have been screwed.

At least the UK system offers 39 weeks statutory. Occupational can be pretty decent if you've been paying in for long enough.

You mean the pension for which I contributed myself

Guess what? My non-existent kids won't be draining the future pension pot either Come on, I thought you had better points than that.
Obviously, you haven't understood how the Swiss pension system works.

That's a kind of proxy, though. You are chipping in with something that's already done. While in your reasoning you are still in the past when people (some) still had a choice over becoming parents. Kids are born unplanned, too. Your cash sponzors disability pension, too. You know how many people have made wrong choices and ended up disabled? This idea of choice you define for us isn't the same as other people's idea of choice. Some university courses were definitely not worth the tax payers' money. Artists get gov subsidies - do you like them all? Or the fact that they chose to be artists and need your money to survive?

There is a notion of trust in those who decide what happens with our cash contributions. This paternity leave might make young-ish guys liability to hire but 2wks against 4 months (4years where I am from) is short.

So the lady across the street in her 30s with 4-5 kids is getting rewarded CHF1500 per month for not giving a damn about family planning?

CHF300 per month meets roughly my grocery needs, so hardly chump change. Most here probably spend that amount on one night out.
oh yeah, absolutely. Also, did you know that there are nice tax breaks if you have kids! so thanks for paying more tax AND giving us free money, me and the lady across the street are very happy.

I don't know about a night out or what that has to do with kids

You are welcome I hope all your 5 kids become high earners and contribute lots of money to the pension/social pot so that if I sell my house and go on social I still will get good amount of money from them

I am bored with this thread now as I have self diagnosed ADHD Was interesting to hear different perspectives. Now I need to concentrate on property search

Thanks for increasing housing demand! The conversion of green fields to asphalt and concrete could not be done without your much valuable contribution. In the name of the construction industry I thank you in advance for the thousands of CHF you'll pay soon to support us
