Your risk of catching it is three times normal risk??
I think he means he has three risk factors ( probably age, diabetes and another one).

There was a very mild flu in my daughter's class like two weeks ago. About half the children got ill, one after the other. I was hoping for lower infection rates but this took away my hope.
Are you sure it was the flu? I ask as it sounds very early to be circulating, unless you are in Oz or Asia.
Also, when people mention a "mild" flu, it is in my opinion, not the flu.

You might want to change the title to 2020/2021 flu vacine.

Depending on zour canton zou can get a flu shot in your local pharmaciy
https://impfapotheke.ch/
https://vaccinationenpharmacie.ch/

The strains in the vaccine are:

Vaccines from Chicken eggs:
A/Guangdong-Maonan/SWL1536/2019 (H1N1) pdm09-like virus
A/Hong Kong/2671/2019 (H3N2)-like virus
B/Washington/02/2019-like virus (Victoria Linie)
B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (Yamagata Linie, quadrivalente Impfstoffe)

For recombinant vaccines or vaccines from cell cultures:
A/Hawaii/70/2019 (H1N1) pdm09-like virus
A/H A/Hong Kong/45/2019 (H3N2)-like virus
B/Washington/02/2019-like virus (Victoria Linie)
B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (Yamagata Linie, quadrivalente Impfstoffe)
https://www.swissdocu.ch/de/news/103...ison-2020-2021

Am I the only one that starts seeing "designer names" in the flu variants? I'm half expecting to see :
A/Hawaii/70/2019 (A3) sativa-dominant-like

B/Amsterdam/02/2019-like virus (Lemon Haze)
B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (Pineapple Chunk, mixed AK47 )

I think a lot of people who say they had the flu in reality just had a (bad) cold.

I’m pretty sure that I have never had the flu in my life but I have had plenty of colds.

I've had flu twice. It's definitely different to a bad cold - limbs like lead.

This is extremely common Switzerland, my colleagues say flu instead of cold all the time.

Exactly. A true flu is very different from a bad cold.

Everyone says 'la grippe' to describe everything from the sniffles to severe flu resulting in pneumonia. Is there even a word in french for 'a bad cold'?

Re: 2020 Flu Vaccine availability.

Keep in mind that the vaccine does not cover you cover you for months and months so there is a trade-off in getting it the moment it is available and waiting for let's say mid-November. The flu peak is normally late January or even late February (see link) depending on the year.

I get the shot each year but try to hold off until mid-November with the hope of having a strong level of the vaccine in the system until the next spring.

Obviously the decision (if you are at risk) should be taken after discussion with your doctor given your specific situation and the number of cases that are already circulating in CH.

Details from previous years (FR page - click to change to DE): https://www.bag.admin.ch/bag/fr/home...t-schweiz.html

There are so many old wive's tales about colds and flu it's hard to know where to start, but it does annoy me when, even in quite modern literature, people suddenly come down with a 'cold' as a result of getting caught out in the rain, or need to wrap up warmly to avoid 'catching cold'.

Surely it's been well enough understood for a couple of generations it's time these myths were consigned to history?

That's not how vaccines work. The vaccine itself will only remain in the system for a few days; the antibodies that are created by the body as a reaction to the vaccine will stay around for a relatively short time, like a few weeks, but the 'memory' of them will remain for many years, meaning they can be created immediately on exposure to the pathogen.

The only reason we need new flu shots every year is to protect against new strains that weren't covered by previous years vaccines.

Re: 2020 Flu Vaccine availability.

What is the cost of the flue jab in Switzerland? I am in the UK this week and I can get it either free or for about £12 ... only travelling back next week , concerned if I take the jab in the next day or so it would make me slightly ill and stop me from travelling.

No one, at least at UK/Swiss airports, are checking temperatures.

Statistically that's quite unlikely. It's a bit like Covid - you can get a mild dose without realising it.

Christmas 2018 I came to my parents feeling a bit under the weather. Slightly raised temperature (38) but more or less ok - evidently passed it to my brother who had to go to a and e with a temperature of 40.5

No, I wasn't sure. It could have been a cold or any kind of spreading viral disease. I just was unpleasantly surprised that it could spread through a class so quickly.

Why unlikely?

I’m also reasonably sure I’ve never had the flu - influenza. I have had two bouts of mycoplasma (walking pneumonia), and colds and upper respiratory infections. There are loads of other bacterial/viral illness - I think influenza itself is not so common compared to colds, upper respiratory, etc.

But if you and your brother live in different environments, you probably have different reactions to the same virus. Different immune profiles, explains why he ended up in emergency.
