Gamma knife in Switzerland

Hi All,

Does anybody here have Gamma knife treatment in CH? I have a little problem in my brain which can be solved with surgery or gamma knife. To tell the truth the surgery option is a bit scary, so I would like to know where gamma knife is available in Switzerland, and what are the experiences about it.

Re: Gamma knife in Switzerland

It's an old article saying the CHUV has the only one in Switzerland.. Probably there's more now.

Re: Gamma knife in Switzerland

The Elekta GamaKnife is just one possiblity how stereotactic radio surgery (SRS) can be done.

Some might argue that the GammaKinfe is "dirty" as it uses Cobalt-60. This might be a reason why there are not so many machines. SRS can also be done with linac (linear accelerator) based systems where one can stop the radiation immeditaly at any given time (if energy is at or bello 6 MV) with the push of a button.

Such systems are the Accuray CyberKnife, Brainlab's Novalis (based on Varian technology) and Varian's own Edge.

What device a hospital has is mostly based on the opinion of the hospitals head oncologist, and what they think is the best machine for SRS and other tasks and also on the capability the Software offers which comes with the machine. In the end the outcome of the treatment depends more on the oncologist than the machine used.

OP - please note that Hirslanden is a private clinic group, so if you don't have half-private or private insurance it could cost a bundle out of pocket.

As far As I know, Hirslanden is on the zh kanton spitallist, so grundversicherung should work there.

How do you know?

If you're already seeing a specialist here they *should* discuss options with you although it does seem usual in Switzerland not to involve the patient in decisions about their treatment. I'm basically treated by google and the hospital does the monitoring.

Surgery isn't so bad if the tumour (I assume) is accessible.

Re: Gamma knife in Switzerland

It is not a tumour, it is a vascular malformation. I know a GK specialist in my homeland, he checked the MRI, and told me that GK could be a fine solution.

The only problem is that due to the covid, i cannot solve it there now.

Re: Gamma knife in Switzerland

This guy looks like a good prospect.

I think if the surgery is necessary and it’s the only place that can do it, even with grundversicherung, they have to do it.

Do you have a GP/Hausarzt? Just in case, you might need a referral ......

Good luck!
