How do dental checkups work in Switzerland?

I am a bit confused about how dental checkups work in Switzerland.

I went to the dental hygienist and she spent about an hour checking, cleaning and doing x-rays. This is far more thorough then in the UK, which is just cleaning for about half an hour.

So my question is, in Switzerland does the dental hygienist kind of cover both a general checkup and cleaning or do I still need to make an appointment to see a dentist for a checkup (even if I don't have issues)?

Re: How do dental checkups work in Switzerland?

My hygenist always does a thorough cleaning and a check for potential cavities or problem spots, and also takes x-rays if it's been awhile (I have very bad teeth and lots of fillings plus two very old root canals). If she spots anything suspicious she has the dentist take a quick look and they decide together if I should book a second appointment with the dentist for further treatments.

In a good year this means I only see the hygenist, but the last time she spotted two problems and I needed to have two fillings re-done. I suppose it comes down to how much you trust the hygenist. I think most of them are quite competent at identifying whether or not you have any issues that might need further work. They do not make a diagnosis as such (that's the dentist's call) but if they don't see any dark spots, loose fillings, cracked teeth, etc. and you have no pain I don't think there is any need to see a dentist. Back in Canada the dentists would always pop in to say hello regardless, but here I only see mine if I need work done.

To be sure, you could always call the hygienist and have her confirm that she didn't see any problems.

That's cleaning. Not a check up. Even in the UK the checkup was from a densist, cleaning from the hygienist. Same here.

Fifteen minutes overal, with the dentist checkingeach tooth, and x-rays every few years. Then a cleaning once per year with takes no more than 30 minutes (I don't have much need since using an electric toothbrush and interstitial brushes).

Re: How do dental checkups work in Switzerland?

A few years ago my dentist in Geneva handed over the basic checks to his hygienist and that includes taking x-rays.
Usual takes 45-60 minutes and the dentist is called in to have a look if anything shows that the hygienist thinks might need dealing with, then a follow-up appointment is made.

We normally only see the dentist if something shows up during the cleaning/checking or we already know there's a problem and book to see him directly.

I go private in the U.K when back home. ..... still cheaper than going to the dentist here!

I don't know how it works at other dentists, but my hygientist cleans for about 50 minutes. She does a basic check and occasionally (not every visit) xrays. She'll call the dentist if she is unsure about anything and he checks the xrays as well. Like everything else here, especially everything dental, it is incredibly expensive.

Given how much lower covid incidence is in Germany, I would go there in the next year or two for dental work. You can't wear a mask for dental work. The chances someone in the office is infected is much higher in Switzerland.

Re: How do dental checkups work in Switzerland?

With my dentist here in CH, I usually have a cleaning by the dental hygienist and then a "control" afterward with the dentist, who basically just pokes around in my mouth for a few minutes and then tells me whether or not I have a cavity and then charges me a bunch of money for it.
