WHERE to go for a drug free birth?? (Vaud)

Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and to Switzerland. Currently in the process of moving to Nyon, and pregnant (first trimester) with baby #2. I am trying to find a hospital, clinic, or birth center that focuses on drug-free birthing and lets me move around and push in any position during labor (not laying down!). I also want my husband to stay in the room with me and baby after birth, and NOT go home. From reading this on this focus, it seems like most hospitals do not allow that. Am I correct? What is the best option for birth in Geneva or Lausanne (assuming good insurance)? I am healthy overall, but would not comfortable with a home birth. I definitely prefer to be in a clinical setting, but also have freedom to push and want my husband around.

Any advice appreciated. Thank you to all!!!

Re: WHERE to go for a drug free birth?? (Vaud)

Hi, citykid and welcome to Switzerland and to the forum!

I expect people living in this area to show up and make some recommendations, but it in principle you can have a drug free birth at any hospital or clinics. Just be careful not to ask for the strongest drugs when you start pushing... It's not a joke, I know women who did that and were told (obviously) it's a bit too late...

Enjoy your time here and all the best to you and your children! I hope someone else will come along soon with more info.

Re: WHERE to go for a drug free birth?? (Vaud)

There is a birthing clinic just outside of Nyon run by midwives.

https://lagrangerouge.ch/

I am not sure how clinical it is for you or not. There is also courses, widwives, etc. that can follow you.

Alternatively, if you go to a hospital or clinic, I think you can request no pain medication with your treating physician, this can be done. But if you want your husband to stay with you, I think all have protocols that this is only possible in a private room or family suite. So you are looking more at private clinic not run of the mill hospital. And if you don't have private insurance, this won't be cheap. Covid may also restrict non patients in hospitals too.

Re: WHERE to go for a drug free birth?? (Vaud)

Thank you very much for the feedback! Interesting you mentioned that midwives can follow you. Does that mean a midwife in private practice is allowed to deliver her patient at a local hospital? Is there such a thing as 'admitting privileges'? In my hometown this is not allowed generally, the patient has to go to the doctors or midwives at the hospital practice directly and must deliver with them only. However, if it's the opposite rule in Switzerland that would be fabulous!

I will also look into La Grange Rouge, thanks for posting the link.

Not sure where you are from but you will probably find most hospitals/clinic are happy to accommodate med free births.

As you mentioned you are just moving, private clinics may not be available to you on insurance unless you have some kind of special contract, so check that as well.

All the best!

A friend delivered there a few times, very happy and with her husband by her side. I know they'd answer your question if they are still open through the lockdown.

Re: WHERE to go for a drug free birth?? (Vaud)

In my experience of giving birth in Switzerland, the expectation was that it would be drug free. I thought I might get some gas and air, which is common in the UK, but was told it's not used here. I don't know if that is still the case.

I don’t understand this wish to suffer ..... I don’t have kids, but I’d definitely have an epidural ASAP! My sister went from I’ll have gas & air .... to give me the works, pretty rapidly

Yeah I guess you should read up on it a little more or have been in the situation to actually comment. There is plenty of good reasons to strive to have a birth without drugs and some women opt for that. It's good to have the choice and make an informed decision for oneself. Believe "wish to suffer" is not the reason women opt to try for a natural birth

And some women want a totally (unmedicated) natural child birth and end-up by having a C-section....a thing like that can change one's perspective the second time around. But I admire those who do. It's worth it.

Yeah... my SIL wanted a natural birth.... ended up with the works.

I've been in the situation twice and why anyone would want to give birth without pain relief boggles my mind. Excruciating doesn't come close. I think a lot of wanting a "natural" birth is because you can't comprehend how it feels until you get there.

I was way more scared at the thought of an epidural than I was of the pain of childbirth.

I don’t know if I was lucky or have a high pain threshold or what but fortunately I never needed one.

A pity if this thread turns into a pros and cons of drugs/pain relief during childbirth. This is definitely not what the OP asked for.

The place in Nyon looks great- we have a similar one in Neuchâtel where several friends have given birth in fabulous conditions.

I've not given birth, but I've had unbearable stomach cramps due to bad period pains, and I'm sure it is FAR FAR worse than that, so I know I couldn't take it.... epidurals were invented for a reason ..... That said, if a woman has a high pain threshold then go for it.... I just think some women feel they should have a "natural birth" as some sort of thing they should/need to do to be a good parent etc etc.

Sorry to go completely off topic... but I just wanted to recommend this book, written by an Obs/Gyn;

Brilliant..... maybe not just before you are going to have a baby though!

Ok..... back to suggestions for the OP!!!

Re: WHERE to go for a drug free birth?? (Vaud)

Drug free is your choice unless there is any dire threat to your health or to your child‘s, and should be available in every hospital. Having dad stay the night, on the other hand, would usually require a private room. Sounds like you have private insurance. For those who don‘t, it is possible to pay out of pocket for an upgrade to a single room in any hospital, but only if they have a single room available as those with private insurance will take precedence.

I was „at risk“ due to my age so never considered giving birth outside a hospital (what’s more, one with a neonatal ICU), and am grateful I didn‘t because I ended up having an emergency C-section. That said, most midwife-run Geburtshäuser have a backup arrangement with a local hospital. If you opt for that, I would suggest asking how far away the hospital is, and what facilities it has. Transport times in the critically ill are, well, critical. And not all hospitals are created equal: a friend suffered massive internal bleeding after giving birth in a posh private clinic where (as in most such places) there are no doctors in the evenings and nights. The person to notice was her mother, a doctor herself, when she visited late that evening. I honestly don‘t know if she would have survived had she fallen asleep.

But enough horror stories - chances are things wil go well. Good luck!

I never considered giving birth outside of a hospital even if I wasn't at risk. And I was right. I heard positive and inspiring stories of water births in an inflatable pool in the middle of the living-room and was pretty sure this is not what I wanted. Each to their own. But we digress. Hope OP will find what she needs.

Yes, you're onto something here but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It can be done or not and no-one should beat themselves up for being less than a"heroic" mother. It's the love and care that counts.
