Pregnant need to find a doctor

Hello All,

I am 8 weeks pregnant and I am in the process of looking for a doctor. To be honest I have no clue what I am doing. I contacted my insurance and they told me I need to choose the doctor/hospital of my choice. My partner is swiss but he is absolutley useless! I dont want to ask friends as I am still only early and I am not ready to tell people yet. Any tips would be greatly appreciated :-)

Re: Pregnant need to find a doctor

Local GPs here don't seem to have anything to do with pregnancy so you need to go to your Frauenarzt, if you have one already, or get one if you don't!
Depending on where you are you should be able to find an English speaking one no problem.

Another option is to have the prenatal care at the hospital you want to give birth at.
But... remember that the speacial pregnancy-cover in your insurance doesn't kick in till a certain number of weeks (anyone know?). So if you have any tests before that it will come out of your excess first.

Good luck, and ask here if you have mroe questions, there are lots of knowledgeable people here! And read the thread What to expect when your expecting in Switzerland, loads of great info.

Best wishes and congrats!

Re: Pregnant need to find a doctor

Congratulations!

If you're in the Zurich area, and I think you are I would recommend a gynecologist in Wallisellen called Dr Grünenfelder. My partner was pregnant with twins and she was really good, organised special checks and talked to us about options for giving birth and at which hospital. She even saw my partner in an emergency very quickly. I think she speaks some good English but not certain as she always spoke Swiss German to my partner and high German with me. Hope this helps and good luck with your search.

Confused with insurance options and finding a GYN

Hi, I went through other topics but cannot find anything strictly related to basic/semi-private insurance options with a new GYN.

I'm at the beginning of my pregnancy and I'm wondering what should I do now.

I don't have a GYN in Switzerland (canton ZH), how do I know if my insurance will cover the checkups with the doctor I'll pick? I saw some recommendations and I think I should make an appointment right away, to get there around 7-9 week of pregnancy.

My semi-private insurance will be valid only from September, my due date will be Nov/Dec - can I use the insurance for giving birth at a private hospital?

Cause from what I know I cannot use other Helsana's benefits like "choose any doctor in all Switzerland" yet because of that waiting period, am I right?
So how do I know whom I can choose with my basic insurance only?

Sorry for chaotic questions, I'm pretty scared of those formalities with my minimal knowledge of German :/

Congratulations!
Many years ago, we found a gynecologist for my wife here: https://www.doktor.ch/gynaekologen/g...ogen_k_zh.html
We selected one that was close for convenience. Then I called the clinic to ask if they accept new patients and if English language is ok (doctors usually can speak English).

Re: Pregnant need to find a doctor

Have you not seen a gynaecologist in the 6 years you seem to be here? That would be the person to turn to.

Comparis has a whole list of gynaecologists.
including the info whether they accept new patients.

You could also ask good friends, pretending you think it's about time to have a general check-up, this way you'd get references from people you trust.

Re: Pregnant need to find a doctor

Thank you all for the tips and information. This is very helpful.

Just FYI, I have been to a Gynecologists since I have lived in Switzerland, but I never want to the same doctor. I always went by what my insurance recommended to me.

First of all - you can choose your gynaecologist. Regardless of your type of insurance.

Second - ask around for recommendations. I don't get the "not telling friends" thing. Who else can help us better? An anonymous internet forum?

Third - Good luck and take care.

Re: Pregnant need to find a doctor

A comment for the partner topic, I attended together with my OH courses that are held at local Zurich hospitals about pregnancy and new babies, it was a good way to get to know about what was about to happen - plus see a bit what the hospitals were like so we could choose one. Also meet other families in the same situation, some of which we are still friends with.

Yes I second this, the birth preparation courses are worth it. We did one at Kantonsspital Uster and it helped us feel more confident with all the many things we had to prepare. It does cost but could be worth looking into

Re: Pregnant need to find a doctor

There are plenty of online courses, even free ones on youtube. Given the pandemic and being pregnant I did not feel comfortable with extra hospital visits. Personally I did not have anything I did not feel prepared for (maybe partially because my sister is a doctor).

I would recommend watching this series, it is the best one I watched. It has three parts (each 40-50mins)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7YucfJuziU

For a hospital visit we arranged a private 1 hour, the same time we took birth plan with us, somewhere around 36th week.
