| | Eye glasses questions
Presbyopia kicking my balls. Until 1-2 years ago, I had close up vision of an electronic microscope and far vision of an Eagle. Glasses were an alien concept. How times have changed!
I got the eye test done and then went to Fielmann to make glasses, I was doing ok until recently, but now I think the number has changed again.
I want to buy some cheap temporary glasses for now and then later in the year I will decide what needs changing, as I have an appointment with my eye doctor. Questions-
1- Where do I order cheap temporary glasses online (for CH)?
2- What exactly does Visus mean, and it's relevance to ordering glasses online?
3- Is there any company that lets you try few of them, and then you return the rejected ones? Like Zalando for eyeglasses?
4- My pupil distance is 62mm, if that helps.
Edited- Confirmed wrong readings so deleted the image.

Not sure about Visus, but there may sometimes be am extra field for bifocals which could be +ve or -ve in that order.
But honestly, with prescriptions that low you're probably better off not bothering. I first got glasses for distance vision 30-odd years ago with a prescription just slightly higher than that, but realistically only ever used them for driving or playing cricket. Some years later my eyes changed such that I no longer needed distance correction, but now have something like 1.25 and 1.5 for details close-up work or reading small text on instructions and the like. I don't even normally carry a pair around with me.
If you're at the age where they start to change then yes, they will probably continue to get worse for a year or three, but for most people who need vision correction your numbers are so low that they'd be thought of as near-perfect vision in comparison.

They were just over 100 GBP. I had a recent prescription from Fielmann as I went in there to get a new frame for a pair of computer glasses so got the tests done at the same time.
Fielmann wanted 600 CHF for the same varifocals.
I was pretty sceptical about buying online, and the low price but wasn't sure whether I really wanted varifocals so thought it was a better gamble than spending 600 CHF.
All I can say is, they're brilliant and I'll definitely buy from there again.
It's a shame they don't do computer glasses though (top half for screen, bottom half for looking down at written text).

I would just order some "cheater" glasses in +.50. Your near vision, once it starts to change, may get worse in fits and starts for a few years, then level out. Cheaters will allow you to deal with that without constantly having new lenses made. At least, it worked for me. It measures how good you are at recognizing small details at distance and is a proxy for how much short-sightedness (negative Sphäre) and/or astigmatism (Cylinder plus Achse) you have. It's the same as the famous "20/20" (feet) or "6/6" (meters) measurement (this is a visus of 1.0). It's not needed for a glasses prescription.
1.6 is very good (you can see at 9.6m what an ordinary person sees at 6m). If you weren't an old man, you'd be prime fighter pilot material...

@ Ace1, I wish I can't read or use my mobile phone without my glasses any more. Far vision is normal as before.
That prescription must be an old one, I asked my eye doctor’s new assistant to send me the latest readings. I think she sent the older one, one of those auto reading machine ones! My eye doc had measured personally and said that my numbers had changed, it must be on her PC and she is away for few months
Screw it, I might visit Fielmann and do the whole measurement thing again and then order online.
I have some plastic tacky ones at home and +2.0 makes everything sharp but gives me a headache. +1.5 makes sharp too, but I like the look from +2.0. I think I need something like +1.75 maybe?
Btw, I have Fielmann one in front of me, but that is even older, it shows my Visus as 1.25.

My near vision used to be similar too, I could read microscopic small text. Yesterday I did not have my glasses with me and I really struggled to align the numbers on those numbered locks. Phone was inside the locker so I could not even use the magnify function on the phone |

Get some cheap reading glasses at Landi. From f3.90, including a hard case.

Yes but I need to know my latest numbers first. The left eye might need a different number from the right eye.
Fielmann test last time I went was around CHF20 only.

Im not wearing glasses but recently noticed my distance vision is gone to pot and my near not as good as it was either. I will go get mine checked but would like to try presbyopia blended laser correction if it warrants it. I know a few docs doing it with good results.

I feel your pain.
I've been battling presbyopia for years, having to change my Rx multiple times per year as it gets worse. A pain in the proverbial, and in my wallet.
My 2p:
When you see an opthalmologist, ask about cataracts as well as presbyopia.
Turns out that the reason I have been having so much trouble - for years - finding a workable Rx for both near and far is not only presbyopia, but also growing cataracts. Glasses alone, even variables, will not fix the problem.
Growing older is hell, ain't it? But as my wise grandmother used to say, far better than the alternative.
Good luck.
(Consider this a general apology for my increasing number of cataract-induced typing errors scattered throughout the forum. )

Do bright lights bother you? Do you see a halo around headlights approaching you. Probably cataracts.

| | | | | They're really just magnifying lenses, so you don't need to worry about matching your prescription exactly, just get the minimum required to do what you need to do, e.g. for reading small text I might use some at +1.25 but for fine detail soldering electronics or threading a needle I'll use the +2.0 ones so I can get much closer/larger, even than someone with normal vision could. Too strong and anything further away than the optimum distance will become blurred and you'll get headache or nausea, too weak is obvious, I'd like to think.
Unless they're scratched I wouldn't bother getting anything more than the cheap ones you already have. I've got multiple pairs around house/flat/cars, some stronger than others, as previously mentioned, including some dead nifty little folding ones, metal and glass not plastic lenses, none of which cost me more than chf5 or so.

No to both. Definitely don't have Cataract, not yet anyway. Ophthalmologist checked for everything end of last year.

I had my lens replaced last year, as I had cataracts. I've gone from being very short sighted to long sighted - +1.5 I've been wearing glasses for over forty years. Now I only use them for reading and sometimes for computer work. I only really need them for reading if the text is very small.
I got my glasses from Galaxus. I buy in bulk as a) they don't last that long b) they're cheap and c) I don't want to pay 9 francs shipping fee. Thin Optics are great. They're small, flexible glasses that sit in a hardened wallet stuck to the back of your phone. Or in a pocket or whatever. 24.90 (Actually, they appear out of stock - maybe they don't sell them anymore?).
The other glasses I have are these. Cheap and cheerful. 9.65 each.
If I need more magnification, I wear both.

Thin Optics are pince-nez (ie They don’t have arms, just sit on your nose). Didn’t work for me as I don’t have a straight nose!

Ophthalmologist checked for everything end of last year. | | | | | Essentially two different things that are often misunderstood , presbyopia is the fact that the ciliary muscles lose their effectiveness to adjust our lens for different needs of vision and also the lens gets hardened over time. Most will develop this ever before cataracts which is clouding of the lens becomes an issue. Nowadays people live with presbyopia as we accept the aging process until we need a cataract and then depending on how much you are willing to pay both are treated with a new lens for the cataract and with features to adjust the vision to remove or improve the presbyopia.
But there is no need to wait until you are half blind from cataracts and suffer 20-30 years of presbyopia as the technology is there to fix the presbyopia well before onset of cataracts.

Just to be clear (hah! see what I did there?) - cataract surgery is covered under basic insurance. (But anything above a standard lens usually isn't - but worth paying for!)
Lens replacement is the most carried out and safest surgery in the world. Before, it was like looking through a dirty window. Now everything is clear. It's wonderful.

See also this thread, where the OP wanted to buy cheap glasses and use one lens from each as needed based on strength.
