Not sure the best place to go. Suggestions? Our health insurance will be retroactive to July 1st, but is not in place yet.

If you know you need stitches and - I suppose - did not chose a GP yet, go to hospital emergency.
Tell them where you will be insured. They will most likely send you a bill as that is how things work here.
By the time you get the bill, you can send it to your insurance (although you will probably have to pay it yourself, due to "Franchise" you still have to send it in, so it counts).

Go to hospital, any with emergency.

If you work this should be covered by accident insurance via your employer as it's not really a sickness

Yeah, that's right. So it needs to be reported to the employer immediately.

And of course if OP doesn't work, the accident-part must be insured with health-insurance (the price for that is peanuts).

Steri-strips and hope for the best.

Or super glue and hope for the very best.

Permanence urgent care centers are really good. I sliced my finger last week, needed 5 stitches and they sewed me up and I got a covid test (unrelated) in an hour. Here‘s a link to urgent care in Lausanne.

Thanks everyone.
I found the emergency room and got taken care of. Did not require stitches after all.
