Is rapid antigen test free in Zurich / Basel / Geneva airport with Swiss insurance?

Will be travelling in a period of time and looking for the pre-travel testing options at Swiss airports.

Since the rapid antigen tests are currently free at a testing centre, at your doctor’s, in a hospital or at a pharmacy, as per FOPH, I would expect these to be free for the Swiss health insurance card holders as well:

For Zurich airport, as it`s located solely in Switzerland, and the lab is considered to be a testing centre, as well as the lab in the nearby Radisson hotel.

Not sure about the Basel airport - as per info on their website - testing lab is located on the French side, hence would expect this to be not free for Swiss health insurance card holders?

In Geneva - would expect it to be free as well, similar to Zurich airport?

Could anyone confirm that, as well as procedure, i.e. have to pay first, to be reimbursed via insurance company later, or not needed to be paid at all.

Why would travel tests be free of charge? Afaik you pay for the ones at the airports.

You don't pay for the test any more AFAIK. You might have to pay for the travel certificate. Have a look around, we have a million Covid threads here.

Also be sure to book an appointment in advance. Everyone wants tests for travel right now and many places stopped taking walk-ins. A report on the news the other night showed long waits at the ZRH airport.

Just checked ZRH airport, you still have to pay. And afaik your insurance does not reimburse you as it is for travel.

Why would your health insurance pay for something that is not health related?

For a travel test you have to pay and your health insurance will not reimburse that.

As from your quote: travel tests are not covered by the free testing agreement.

Better book a spot now if you want to travel

PCR tests - yes, wont be covered for travel.
Rapid-antigen - are already covered in the pharmacies, https://www.englishforum.ch/travel-d...-cheapest.html

I think the issue is with the definition of "for travel" and the fact that it can not be determined.
The destination country accepts a test result, even if it was not done "for travel" purposes, so there is really no way for the health insurance to determine if a test was for travel purposes or not. The only way would be to force pharmacies to communicate whether a certificate was issued or not, and to reject those with written certificates - but that does not seem to be the case

As I understand it, you have to have a valid reason to have a free PCR test. Like, your doctor or contact tracers sent you to the test center, or you have symptoms, or your home test showed positive result etc. You cannot just have it for free in order to attend the meeting of your local club, or to visit your old parents, or to travel.

yes, have seen a thread about rapid tests in pharmacies (there was a link to Zurich gov website which would show all the pharmacies providing such an option), but airport itself is also an option.

+ interesting to find out about Basel/ Geneva too.

Certificate, as far as it was stated in the news, should be free of charge since late June as well

the info there did not change for ages + it does not segregate for swiss insurance card holders and others, who don't hold it (as not only swiss will use that option, right, hence they will definitely pay). For example Geneva airport website states that tests are free for French nationals.

Why it should pay? as goverment said so, perhaps similar when 5 free tests were started to be given at some point.

Though both your and mine are only guesses, so would need someone`s, who has been through the procedure in the last 2 weeks, confirmation though

The government website states: ''The federal government covers all the costs of rapid tests that you have done at a testing centre, at your doctor’s, in a hospital or at a pharmacy.''

There are no exclusions stated for rapid tests (there are, on the other had, for the PCR tests: ''The federal government does not cover the costs of PCR tests in the following cases: You need a negative test result for travel.'')

On paper this sounds as rapid antigen test should be free in Zurich airport. Not sure how is that in reality at present

Rapid antigen tests ARE FREE no matter the reason. But they can charge you for a certificate (!)

Check the website of the airport as it changes all the time.

Another useful link to find pharmacies where you can get tested.
