Hello, I am about to get health insurance for my 3-month old baby.

Braces are horribly expensive, so I was thinking that, at some point, baby might need health insurance coverage for that. But it's clearly too early.

My question: can I insure baby now without orthodontic coverage and add it a later time, say when baby starts changing teeth (but clearly before potential issues manifest)?

Same for glasses?

EDIT: yes, I know it might be cheaper to cross the border for braces, just considering my options for now

Just ask your current insurer to upgrade your kid’s policy. We got it even before the birth. After birth it may cost a bit more but I doubt it will be significant.

As for Glasses I see not much point in this.
Glasses are partially covered by basis insurance (up to ~190 / year if i remember correctly), and eye tests etc. are normally fully covered. (my little one has glasses and at places like fielmann you can get glasses for kids for anywhere between 100 - 400 chf so even with normal insurance your 'out of pocket' will be up to ~200 chf per couple of years... that might be less than paying premiums for many years.
