Missing a dentist appointment...

Hi there,

I would like to ask the kind EFers here if they ever had any experience with missing a dentist appointment and then being charged for the the missed appointment. Do you recall how much were you charged?

Short story short: OH had to cancel an appointment with the dentist just one hour before it was supposed to happen due to some work emergency and he was charged for the cancelled appointment around 350 chf. We both feel like it is kind of...much, for nothing, nothing really, as they didn't even have to prepare a room for him, but have no idea if we can contest this fee or whatever. Any experience? First impulse was to just pay it and don't lose any thought on it, after all it is normal they charge an appointment which was cancelled on short notice, but then it's not quite an insignificant amount is it...I mean they charge there an hour of DH with like 160 chf.
Thanks all.

Re: Missing a dentist appointment...

I think it's reasonable. I know my dentist is booked solid, so any missed appointments will cost them money. Also, one hour notice is not enough time to reschedule.

Having said that, I missed an appointment once, when stuck on the motorway, behind a crash. I called my dentist from the car and they rescheduled without charge.

Re: Missing a dentist appointment...

It depends what was planned for your OH, if it was major dentistry then maybe Fr 350 is reasonable, otherwise it does sound steep.

Did you already try to call and negotiate?

Re: Missing a dentist appointment...

I cancelled one yesterday for a son with 25 hours notice as he was sick.

I couldn't find anything on their website about fee rates with notice period times.

I hope there's no fee.

Re: Missing a dentist appointment...

I disagree -- I don't think the charge for the cancelled appointment should be any more than if the appointment had taken place. If the appointment would normally cost CHF160, then the penalty shouldn't be CHF350. Different for habitual offenders, perhaps, but life happens and thinks occasionally have to be cancelled on short note.

I don't see any reason why the dentist should loose out on his income. How much would the planned treatment have cost and what does the conditions say about short cancellations?

My dentist will not charge if you cancel more than 24 hours before hand, otherwise you are charged the same as if the work was carried out.

Re: Missing a dentist appointment...

What was the appointment for? Teeth cleaning? root canal under anesthesia? this will make the charges different and its not about how much was actually spent, rather the missed income.

No, not root canal or anything like that. A new (small) filling and the replacement of an older one, so basically two fillings.

I guess they would have cost around 700chf, this is what they usually charge there. I knew they were expensive but even then it seemed a bit too much. Anyways, we have written them an e-mail but I don't have any hopes they will "recalculate". I think my old dentist wouldn't have charged and just rescheduled, (most probably, but we were his clients for a long time), but this is a new place.. we have never cancelled an appointment on such short notice and had no idea what or better said how much to expect. We'll see what they say but am already mentally prepared to pay the bill and move on. It was good to ask here and not to hold a grudge against them.

Re: Missing a dentist appointment...

Whenever I've missed an appointment, I've never been charged - at least the first time! For my dentist it says a 100 franc fee may be charged.

Well if they charged you half of what you would have paid, it's nice.

I agree that some leeway is needed but then again I also understand if businesses are strict about this.

I just had a tricky filling done in the U.K., it took him an hour and cost me £180 - god knows how much that would have been here, I really donít understand why people go to the dentist in Switzerland.

It's not too bad. You paid only 350 CHF and on top of that, you don't have to pay 11k for some unneeded molar reconstruction.

Re: Missing a dentist appointment...

Seems tough- but on the other hand- your husband missed the appointment because of an emergency with his work/business- so saving the business a crisis = money, to the detriment of the dentist's work/wage, so ...

Perhaps his work will cover the cost, in this case, as he had to miss app. for business/work reasons. Unless of course he made appointment during work hours. Understand your pain though.

How do you find a dentist in the UK unless you are a long-term client? Our dentist has retired. And how do you get appointment and possibly several return visits (in case of root treatment, etc), at short notice. We have found in the past that our dentist in the UK charges very similar prices to our here- mind you, over the border in France.

Just booked an appointment with the dentist my Dad uses. Not hard to get accepted as a private patient. Works well for annual check ups, cleaning and non-emergency work. Think even if you needed a few visits the cost of an easyJet flight would be less than a Swiss dentist.

Also a trust issue. Went to a Swiss dentist once and was told I needed 4 fillings. Went to get a second opinion in U.K. and they told me that was not the case

Re: Missing a dentist appointment...

Depends on who was booked. If the doctor, the standard rate is 80 per 15 mins, so 320 per hour. They might be lenient and only charge a part.

Convenience, really. If something comes up they have your file, can fix everything quickly etc. besides my old childhood dentist is retired and her son, who is also a dentist, surprise surprise lol, works in Belgium now.

True that and I think it also depends on the "Taxpunkte"...so yeah, hard to argue anything with them.

Maybe because we donít all have the luxury of being able to travel to see a dentist, especially if multiple visits are required.
Plus the convenience factor, especially if thereís an emergency.
