Antenatal Classes in Zurich in English

Hi, we have just moved to Zurcih and my wife is 5 months pregnant. We don't speak German and need to start Antenatal Classes in english. does anyone know whether this exists or can propose any classes?

Also, can you suggest any places for my wife to meet with other english speaking soon-to-be moms or new mums??

Thanks for your advice

Re: Antenatal Classes in Zurich in English

I did a very good antenatal weekend course in English in the Bethanian hospital in Zürich few years ago. AFAIK, they still do them.

Toblerstrasse 51

Hi,
I recommend The New Stork Times in Zurich. I found the classes very good and informative. The course also includes one Breast feeding class.

All the best!

Re: Antenatal Classes in Zurich in English

we attended the bethanian course run by an australian midwife. I thought the course, and she, was great. What I liked was that she wasnt preach-y. One thing I came to learn when pregnant (and now a mother) is that there are strong schools of thought on everything...and people are not shy in telling you what is WRONG and what is RIGHT etc.

She was relaxed, was happy to cover all aspects pre and post natal and having had 3 kids (born here and in australia) had a lot of practical advice. She adapted the course content according to what we wanted to know as well.

I know two friends that have done the new stork times course. They also recommend it highly. In my own opinion I did find them a bit too pro-natural and although I ended up having a drug-free birth I wanted to know what my options were.

It is a great way to meet other english speaking parents to be. we still keep in touch!

good luck.

The Australian mid wife also ran the course I was on. I fully agree with you s-hobi, she was great. She also orders some great booklets from Australia on safety with children and settling babies which you can buy for about 5 chf. I still have and use mine and that was 4 years ago.

Re: Antenatal Classes in Zurich in English

Most hospitals will offer a class, and many of the larger Zürich hospitals do them in English.

I personally did the New Stork Times one during my first pg and found it very good, although I would agree with the poster who said it also had quite a strong emphasis on the 'natural' route. I wouldn't be able to honestly say that I felt it was totally balanced, and as I ended up with a c-section I didn't feel as prepared for that as I could have been. However the breastfeeding course was fantastic and really helped me get off to a great start (and you can do the bf course on its own without signing up to the childbirth prep classes too).

For em the best part about the classes was that I met some wonderful people and am still in regular contact with all of the other Mums' who attended my original birth class (almost 4 years ago).

This is a 'three for the price of one' sort of post.
Welcome to the Forum for a start, as you haven't posted before. Looks as if you've found help with the Antenatal Theme too.
If you just look through the titles of other Threads in this same part of the Forum as this one, you'll find the Threads saying where the other Mums hang out. There are quite a few around - number increasing by the minute.
Good luck and I hope everything goes smoothly.

Hi GCDM
welcome to Zurich and congratulations on your pregnancy.

Her name is Kiely (pronounced Kylie) Schenkel. I think the easiest is to contact Bethanian Hospital. I dont have her phone number anymore.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

If you have anymore questions dont hesitate to contact me...I have had two kids here in Switzerland so not an expert but have learnt a few little things along the way

Re: Antenatal Classes in Zurich in English

Bethanien: Weekend Course for a couple CHF 390.00 , see the info in german

Your insurance should pay part of it, it's best if you ask there.

I recommend this course: http://www.hebammenpraxis-zuerich.ch/antenatal-class/ - It's lead by independent midwifes and is not sponsored by a birth clinic...

Re: Antenatal Classes in Zurich in English

I attended the one in Klinik Im Park. I think it is not bad, but will be more helpful if you intend to give birth there as they spend quite some times showing the birthing room and the facilities there.
