School option near Gland/Nyon/Rolle

Can someone help me to understand if there are any options of local school with two languages - English and French. If not local school which are other international schools in nearby area which are also affordable

Is it possible to get admission for my 5.5 years old daughter either in local or international school when we arrive in Jan 09.

Re: School option near Gland/Nyon/Rolle

Very briefly, as I'm a bit pushed for time but felt sorry that you hadn't any replies!

- International schools are all expensive, some more than others, and places are very tight. A new school has just opened up this term based in Rolle, which covers primary level. They may have more places, being new. Can't recall what it's called, sorry, but Googling 'international school rolle September 08' should throw it up. Or search on this forum, it was discussed quite a lot when first announced earlier this year.

- Ecole Nouvelle Suisse Romande is bilingual, nr Lausanne, and I believe Champetitts (sp?), a private French-speaking school, has some English teaching. I vaguely think Haut-Lac does a bilingual stream, too. Sorry, international schools really aren't my strong point!

- State school: depending on her birthday, your daughter will be eligible to start in the enfantine (kindergarten) that is local to where you live (there is no option to choose). The cut-off date for Vaud is June 30th, so if she won't be 6 until after that date, she will be in the 1st yr enfantine; otherwise, she would be in 2nd yr enfantine. She will therefore be either pretty much the youngest or the oldest in her class, based on where her birthday falls.

If you're planning to be in Switzerland longterm and assuming she has no French, there is perhaps an argument for placing her in 1st yr enfantine anyway to give her 18 months before 'proper' school, otherwise it would be hard work for her to be a French beginner AND the youngest in her class. My friend's son turned 6 two weeks after the cut-off, so missed the school intake despite being already able to read and write in English; they were initially unsure about how he would get on in 'playschool' but he loves it and they are now delighted that he will have that additional year to get French.

I'm unaware of any bilingual state schools; here, the first language taught is German, at 3rd grade (age 8), then English at 7th grade (I think.. my son's only in 3rd grade, so I'm more hazy on older kids!).

Hope this helps, do ask again if you have any more questions.

Good luck with your move - it's beautiful here at this time of year.

Try this - newly opened. Our kids go to the school in Monts de Corsier and we are very happy with it
