two foreigners want to divorce in Switzerland?
 

Hi there,

We, two non-swiss, got married in Zurich severals years ago.
Now we are out of Switzerland and can't go back without applying a visa,
and, we want to divorce.
We don't know German, so it's difficult to find out hints from searching the web.
I would very much appreciate it if you can tell me the procedures, or provide me a webpage/email address where I can address my questions.

your location is Geneva but you say you're out of Switzerland?

Get divorced where you are. Ask the authorities what they need to process the divorce - do you have your marriage certificate?

I was in Geneva and forgot to change it....
I have the certificate, and an email address of the authority in Zurich is exactly what I am looking for...

Which country are you in now? If there is a bilateral agreement then maybe you won't even need to deal with CH any more.

P.S- Any marriage or how to avoid divorce related free tips for me? :) Maybe I could learn something from your advice :msnblush:

Thanks! we are in US now.
Where can I find the contry list having the bilateral agreement with CH?
didn't get it by google...
And I guess US should have such an agreement with CH, then what I shall do?

I have no good advice for you, :-(,
I am still considering the possibility.
but my thought is that divorce is not end of the world, and maybe we are just not the right match...

I am not sure but why not try phoning the local divorce place in US and see if they can throw some light? Maybe they will let oyu know if they recognize Swiss marriage?

or somewhere else to see if there is an email address I can use...
Calling them is not prefered by me because of the time difference...

Divorce

In the event of divorce, a woman has to wait between six and twelve months before she may revert to her maiden name.

Under Swiss marriage law she has to wait 300 days before remarrying (this is not the case for men).

why not take some time to ask in the US as to WHAT YOU NEED TO PROVIDE TO DIVORCE THERE?

YOU HAVE YOUR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE.

As you do have the certificate, surely it should not be as hard as you're trying to make it?
