Vasectomy

"Inspired" by the thread about fertility doctors - what's the situation regarding getting a vasectomy in CH? Can it be done on the health insurance, or is it a "luxury" that one would have to pay for oneself?

I need a scissors icon for this post

Re: Vasectomy

ok according to Progres Insurance benefit package - Basic Compulsory health care insurance KVG (which is similar to other insurance companies' basic KVG) Vasectomy is not covered. But in their supplement health care - 75% max, CHF3,000 per year.

So do check with your health insurance company on their supplement health care.

Per year - as in if it doesn't work the first time, you can go again ?

At first I thought you were saying all insurance brokers had to have it done

Then I realised the system is different there than where I am at the moment. Thanks, I will look into it when I get my insurance lined up.

Re: Vasectomy

Most insurances wont cover it. Expect the cost from your own pocket to be roughly 900fr. Hubby was in and out within an hour's time. Most doctors plan this procedure on a Friday morning so that you have the weekend to rest up.

Re: Vasectomy

I congratulate you on taking the responsibility of birth control. It makes it so much easier on your partner.

Men who've had vasectomies are a cut above the rest. :-)

My hubby had it done a good few years back. He was very tender afterwards (as to be expected) and just rested up for a couple of days, the first day with a cool pack applied to the "fixed area". Following that he was ok.

As it was done in the UK, can't say about the insurance.

Good luck though.

The operation is reletively painless, afterwards it feels like a bad kick in the balls for a few days. I did not have insurance for it but they (after a discussion before the op) did pay for half of it. A doctor near Stadelhofen (Zurich) charged me Chf800 including the tests afterwards, so my cost was Chf400 and I was happy (relatively speaking!!) with his services. Make sure you have someone to drive you home afterwards, you will not be able to drive and the bus or train WILL be too rough. Good luck, wise choice.

They told me I could drive home and I did. They also told me I should wear a slip which had me puzzled and I was prepared to go along with it until I found it means something completely different in German.
