Pregnancy: 19 week foetal ultrasound

We will be travelling through Switzerland on vacation at the time I need to have my 19/20 week ultrasound scan for foetal abnormalities. In Australia (where we live), as a private patient (which I am) this normally takes place at a private specialist ultrasound clinic to which you are referred by your obstetrician. My obstetrician has advised that it should be easy to get the scan done overseas by getting a referral to a clinic from a GP, but doesn't have any suggestions for where I should go. I'd be grateful for advice on:
- the process for arranging these scans in CH (are they standard practice in most pregnancies? can you just go to a GP and get a referral?)
- recommendations of English-speaking GPs and/or ultrasound clinics in either Zurich or Geneva (and contact details, ideally electronic, if you have them)
- any information on costs (I have private health insurance in Australia, but haven't yet found out if that will cover me in CH)
Ideally, I would like to arrange the appointment from Australia before we leave for Europe (about three weeks time).

Thanks for your help.

Hi Leec,

Try link below for further details. The receptionists usually speak some English. Call them and see if they will take you or if they can recommend someone. Dr Fritz speaks good English & is a nice guy.

It's also easy to get to by public transport if you are in Zurich.

Otherwise the university hospital may help as it is public.

Good luck

Re: Pregnancy: 19 week foetal ultrasound

In Geneva theres Dianecho

http://www.dianecho.ch/

they were very good and Dr Extermann did mine he spoke some English. I was referred there by my gyno, and I just called them up and said that he was referring me and that was all fine. I had appt and then they sent back the results etc to him
But I guess you could just call up and say that yr dr in australia was referring you?
Cantremember what it cost am afraid, it wasnt cheap (!) but not too shocking I dont think

Re: Pregnancy: 19 week foetal ultrasound

In Switzerland you can contact an Ob/Gyn directly, there is no need to go through a GP. Scans are normal here, in fact I had one at every check-up with both my pregnancies. Nearly all Ob/Gyn's have ultrasound equipment in thier office so it should just be a matter of figuring out where you will be and calling one for an appointment. If you search through Family Matters there are already quite a few recommendations for English speaking Dr's. If you need any more info then please post again.
