| | Confirming pregnancy
Hi, I was wondering whether doctors in Switzerland confirm pregnancy with blood test.
I know GPs in UK don't and I was curious whether it'd be different over here.
Can anyone please shed some light on this?
Thank you!

Can't tell you, but peeing on a stick works fine these days for the big yes or no, and it's cheaper than a blood test. Not oak or pine. |

My doctor did a blood test to confirm I was pregnant. It took a few days for the results, but that's really the only way to be 100% certain. At home pregnancy tests work too, but are not 100% reliable and can sometimes give confusing results (is that really a line???). Good luck!

Some doctors don't do blood tests, but my doctor did an ultrasound at 6 weeks where I could see the heartbeat.
I found Clearblue tests the worst for accuracy. I got no line at all and I was pregnant. The next 2 tests I took had no lines in the test window. The Migros ones are the best value for money and seem to work well.

Usually the process goes like this: you check at home with Clearblue or similar. You find out your are pregnant and you call your doctor for an appointment. Usually you get your appointment for the next week or so. At this appointment they do the full check. They check your urine, they do an ultrasound, they check your blood, your blood pressure, the works. With the blood test they usually check Hb, sugar, pregnancy hormones (which is what you are after), HIV, Toxoplasmosis, Rubella etc.
If you feel unsure of whether you are pregnant or not, you can call your doctor and I am sure you can come in to do a urine test and a blood test. In my experience though, the home tests are extreemly reliable.

I agree, start with a home kit - these are really reliable these days, and then go and see your Gynocologist (not your regular doctor), and you will get a full test and best of all you'll get to see you baby!!! I didn't expect this when I went and it was amazing - and seeing is believing!
Good luck and if you are pregnant, then Switzerland is a great place to give birth, they take really good care of you, before and afterwards. Enjoy!!

Are the ultrasounds more advanced these days? Or is it still done internally in the early months?
This is just so no one is surprised if they still take the "inside route" because I sure had a moment way back when.

A home test that is positive is 100% positive. It can only show if you have pregnancy hormones - it doesn't matter if the line is weak or strong. If it's there, it's there!
However, if your body is not yet producing enough hormones for it to show, the result may be a "false negative". So, even if you don't see a line (perhaps because it's too early to tell), you may still be pregnant.
That's basically how reliable the home urine tests are.
If you're early on, and the line doesn't show up, it may be best to wait a couple of weeks. If you really need to know, then a visit to the doctor is the only way to go.

With both of my pregnancies I just stopped by my OB/GYN for a blood test. Home pregnancy tests never worked for me |

I found the trick with home pregnancy tests is to use them in the morning, when the urine (and hormones) are more concentrated. If I remember correctly it does recommend doing that in the manual.

I went to my GP who did a urine test and then he sent me to see a gyno who did an internal scan to check the heartbeat - that was at 5 weeks.

Thank you guys so so much!
I took 2 home pregnancy tests and they both confirmed I was pregnant.
This is my first and I really wasn't sure what to do.
I'll arrange an appointment with gyno tomorrow and hopefully that will make me feel less nervous..
