special needs in Geneva

I hope someone can help me. My family has the opportunity to relocate to the Geneva area for my husbands job. I have three children 2,4,and 9. I have tons of questions but mostly concerned about the schools. My oldest daughter has PDD/Autism. She is very high functioning, verbal, social etc. She is fully included in her home school here in the US and I want to know what services would be available to her in geneva?

Are there any laws protecting these children? How inclusion friendly is Geneva? I would want my daughter to attend a regular or private school with typically developing peers not a "special school".

What about the education requirements compared to the US?
Thoughts or resources please respond. This is an overwhelming descion to make and I want to have as much information as possible.

Regards,
m.comparetto5@comcast.net

Re: special needs in Geneva

I have a friend who has an 18-year-old special needs child who is now in a "work placement" organised locally. I'll try to get more information from him about what that is.

He was schooling with special needs peers - so maybe is more afflicted that your daughter. In any case, I would say any information you can glean is good?

Hi,
sorry but don`t have any info but it may be worth contacting some of the schools and education depts directly. Here is also a website for kids with special needs in geneva, you may have seen it already.
http://www.allspecialkids.org/AboutASK.htm

http://www.autisme-suisse.ch/

As I don`t know if you would be staying in Vaud or Geneva I would contact both authorities- they have always been very helpful when i have had any queries.

http://www.avdep.ch/ some private schools

Vaud education dept- http://www.vd.ch/index.php?id=249

Geneva- http://www.geneve.ch/dip/
good luck

Jo

Re: special needs in Geneva

In the case of your daughter, it will be very complicated.
You should come and visit the schools before you commit to come to Switzerland. As far as I know it has been always a problem for such cases. The state institutions are not great places to go to, they are not flexible. The private international schools might take her but it will cost.

Re: special needs in Geneva

The international schools are even better than in most american states.
My experience with american kids is that they are always far behind other kids in primary.

Are there any laws protecting them? Very few as she isn't herself a Swiss national, is she?

What I suggest is that you send you kid to an International school. The problem with the public schools is not that they cannot accommodate to her needs, but she'll have a lot of problem integrating with the children. It won't be easy. The Swiss system is also very rigorous, which might have effects on her health.

Hello,

I am wondering if you had any luck finding a school for your daughter? We were in exactly the same position last year with our (i'm actually her nanny) 12 year old. We have now set up a home school situaton with four amazing tutor's. I would love to hear about your experiences with schools and groups.

Re: special needs in Geneva

Hi,

I can appreciate your situation, with regards to the International School in Basel, my understanding is that they offer some support which although helpful may not be sufficient. Anything over and above that has to be funded in full privately.

Good Luck
Bree
