I did a speech a few months ago about the side effects of medications. It really is scary. Do a little research on the web about side effects and medications and you will be quite surprised. Often the side effects make people more sick than they really are.

You say the whole things is forgotten and done with. but is it really. You still continue to have migraines.

You can learn how to deal with your migraines
Most medications do have side-effects. Unfortunately there is not a "cure" only treatments for migraines. Otherwise we would be seeing a Nobel Prize wouldn't we?

Re: Migraines - may they be cursed forever ! ! !

48 hours would be a good one for me, mine nearly always last 3 days. I had one once about 25 years ago that lasted 5 days - thankfully clearing at night. So those websites that say they can last 'up to' 2 days are talking rubbish. Suffice to say paracetamol or iboprofen are just pointless.

I find doctors don't tell you very much unless you know beforehand and go and ask. I wasn't told about Imigran till I moved to the Middle East (and I was no longer on the NHS!) I only found out about Almogran because I went to the doctor about the symptoms I was getting with Imigran - burning skin sensation and heart palpitations in particular. After the migraine I felt like I'd been battered and bruised - they are really powerful drugs so it's important to get them right.

Imigran used to be a 'wonder drug' for me - I'd be up and about an hour after taking it - but I guess over time your body just gets used to it or maybe less tolerant.

Thats exactly what my wife has recently been diagnosed with. The hole in the chamber thing and she suffers from Migraines.
Sometimes takes Immigran or Migraleave.

I'll show her this thread later.

I get all the symptoms of a migraine minus the pain. Only started a few years ag. Weird.
Mr Organ has the exact same thing, no pain (thankfully) but still makes him feel tired and unwell, very strange.

Same happened to me - migraines started when I was about 18, peaked in my 20's (the kind of "leave me alone to die" types)
I had no idea this post existed. The above post sums up me pretty well at the moment I guess. For some reason they seem to get really bad when it snows a lot? I dont know if that is really related..

My Mum suffers BADLY from migraines and has tried everything available in Australia but has had no luck. They are the worst thing. They make me reluctant to get a job because I wonder how I'll cope on the days I have migraines.......?

currently take immigran for them but they are scary strong tablets that give me terrible side effects for the first hour of taking them- but they are the only thing that shifts them
I take Immigran too.. so I guess that means you can get it here? I was kind of worried, I brought big stocks of it over from Australia (I had a healthcare card there so could buy them for about $1 each so muuuch cheaper than usual) but they are slowly getting diminished.
They also give me horrible side effects. So I'm so reluctant to take them.. but they really seem to work and nothing else does..

The contraceptive pill shows promise of reducing, if not elimination my migraines altogether.
Really? For me, the Pill made them worse. Maybe its the particular (strong) one I'm on/it definitely is - the regular Pill didnt give me any problems, but it certainly didnt cure them either. Is this a certain type of Pill youre talking about??

dont buy the red one (that's the strong one)-its way too strong and will blow your brains away..the white one's much nicer and more soothing.
My mum actually recommended the red one to me.. but maybe it depends what type of migraine you have or something. Although I expect she is just the type who wants to blow her brains away during a migraine.

Sada for once I feel your pain - I am on day 5 and ran out of my trusty imigran tablets
Uhhh.. I have some if you get desperate..! (Not sure if its weird to offer people medication)

Re: Migraines - may they be cursed forever ! ! !

I had suffered from migraine for over 20 years when a friend suggested I consult a doctor in our local medical centre who practiced acupuncture. I remember saying to him "I don't believe in this, but I've got nothing to lose and perhaps something to gain". After one treatment, a migraine headache tried to break through, but did not gain ground. The treatment lasted 6 months, and I was completely cured of migraine - that was over 30 years ago - and I have never had a migraine since.

I used to have Immigran as well. But when I went to my new doctor in Switzerland she said they didn't have it here. So she gave me Cafergot witch is double stronger Needless to say, I feel sick after taking it, but heck, everything is better than the migraine

My magic solution was discovered after I stopped taking the pill. It has decreased significantly after that.

Yeah I was scared of not being able to get Immigran as well.....
And yeah my migraines werent nearly as bad or as often before I started taking this stupid Pill.. but the Pill seems to control my endometriosis for me soooo.. I dunno.. I guess I think migraines are perhaps the lesser of the two evils ?

Ok, where were we ... I am honestly amazed how many actually do suffer from this pest.
Can't be cured, that's true just like there's no magic cure for hangovers.

Again I have said this before, probably on this thread but want to to grumble about it again...

...I never got prescribed immigran on the NHS they told me there was nothing but ibuprofen available to me for over 10 years - my aunt who works in a dispensing doctors told me their practice had been prescribing immigran for years and years - the whole time I was being told to just take stronger doses of ibuprofen

The side effects are pretty nasty but after having the 3 days migraines regular for many years i could handle an hour to 2 hours worth of nasty side effects to not suffer for 3 days

However if the other drugs work and don't have the side effects then bonus

my brother also had horrible migraines and he's definitely not a "natural medicine" kinda guy, but he started acupuncture for them too and now he rarely gets one.

that being said, my sister in law tried it and it was a no go. so i guess it's up to the individual's body/chemistry/sensitivity etc.
either way i know they can be horrible- thankfully i've never had one but seeing my bro suffer- was enough for me to empathize.

-Yes, I think it's because of the budget each doctor has (on the NHS) and having a patient on Imigran can eat into it. Before I knew about it I was going to the doctor and he knew I had a baby and toddler to look after as well as going down with these migraines for days at a time. Makes my blood boil thinking he knew all along. When I started on Imigran they were only available as 100mg (now 50mg) but I worked out half a tablet worked better for me. Then moved again, saw a new doctor who confirmed the 50mg tablets were better! Why don't they give you the info they have - and what is with that doctor telling you Imigran is not available in Switzerland?!

My son has asthma - was born with it - and it was ME who told him it was asthma. He wouldn't believe me. In fact just today I was with my son getting his prescription and another doctor there happened to mention there is a better medicine but said it as if something slipped out of his mouth and that he didn't want to interfere!

Sorry I think I have confused you. I had no problems getting immigran over here in Switzerland - just in the UK. I saw the screen when a UK doc eventually prescribed me it and for 12 tablets it was £86! That's why the NHS are tight lipped

Re: Migraines - may they be cursed forever ! ! !

Sorry to hear how many out there suffer from this horrible beast called "Migraine".

My mom suffered for decades and nothing helped here... she used to spend days in dark rooms, hardly eating until it finally went away.
Doctors said to her only age will help as nerves will eventually age too - they were right. She is finally relived from it (aging has an advantage after all ;-)

Sadly, it seems her daughter - moi - had inherited it

However, mine are rather mild, so far. I also learned to react immediately. You see, all the years of agony watching my mom suffering and trying to help her had taught me something:
- Immediately disconnecting from current tasks and going to bed
- closing curtains and making sure your stress level is low as low can be
- drinking a lot of water
- dip yourself in your bathtub, if possible. It helps relaxing muscles
- learn some face massage techniques. My Migraine seem to start on left side of my neck.

God bless my family Doctor, she taught me all that and gave me some homeopathic stuff to take immediately at beginning, and some stronger stuff in case nothing else helps.

Let me know if you need more details and/or if there is anything one can do to help!

Re: Migraines - may they be cursed forever ! ! !

I found tigerbalm really helpful but messy – I now use a menthol stick from the UK called 4head that is very convenient to use and very effective.

http://www.4headaches.co.uk/

I’ve been a member of Migraine Action for years – it’s a forum that is great for exchange with other migraineurs and I picked up some great tips that I use regularly:
http://www.migraine.org.uk/

In Zurich there’s also a doctor who both treats and leads a research team on migraine. He speaks great English and is on the ball with experimental treatments:

Dr. med. Reto Agosti
Spezialarzt FMH
Münchhaldenstrasse 33
8008 Zürich Kreis 8 (Mühlebach)

That's interesting. Do you have any idea what it is about?
I once took part of migraine research, but never heard about any conclusion from it

Re: Migraines - may they be cursed forever ! ! !

gosh, so many sufferers ; ive had them too. mine last about 8 hours and usually invovle vomitting , exploding brain feeling and on a couple of occassions a black out , waking up in hospital.

cant seem to find triggers though i suspect neck tension or bright sunlight ( sun low on horizon ) as the main suspects.

if anyone does have any really good remedies please pm me ; i use immigran nasal spray as mine come on in minutes , also go just as quickly .

thanks and best wishes
