Age for being the remote control controller?

Although I only allow my 5-year old son to watch TV after dinner and before bed, he is already claiming the remote control and sits with it tucked under his arm when watching TV.

Is this normal for a young child? Does anyone else remember when they started being the remote control controller?

Only if he's watching this:

Otherwise, thunder against it!

Yes... if you allow it to continue but you are the parent and it's "the parents" who are suppose to be in control.

Trust me, its not something I encourage or allow, I was just wondering what it is was that made him start doing it at such a young age. Is it a male thing? Are girls the same?

Well look on the bright side, as least you know where to find it! When my kids (7 & 11) have been watching TV, the controller is usually missing... they will both agree that they must have had it to turn on the TV in the first place, but will deny all knowledge of what happened to it. I've gotten so fed up of having to find it after they have gone to bed, that I bought my very own one

I have a 8 year old girl, and 5 year old son, and they are both the same, my problem is that they argue over the remote.

Re: Age for being the remote control controller?

The dog took the remote control in her mouth and changed the channel to something like Animal Planet. A quick, authoritative "No!" and decisive taking-back of the device put paid to such nonsense.

(Didn't try to do that with the 'alpha' other half though. He resumed watching a plodding episode of 'Tatort'. )

I wouldn't worry too much - he's probably copying what he perceives as "adult behaviour" rather than intentionally hogging the remote control for the purposes of commandeering the television.

He's a kid and he's testing out what he can and can't do and how much he can get away with which, unfortunately, means he's totally normal .

My sister has a daughter just a wee bit older than your son and she has now got the to stage of telling her mother that she shouldn't watch too many "shouty programmes" (soap operas) because it is bad for her.

Sometimes kids just know best.

Re: Age for being the remote control controller?

I once remember a discussion (don't know about what anymore) which I ended to my advantage saying: 'I am right as I am god for it is I who has the remote control'

It's good to know it's not unusual then and that my son is not a remote control addict already, although I guess he will grow up to be given half a chance

Re: Age for being the remote control controller?

I don't even let my 14 year older hog the remote! She has a few programmes she's allowed to watch or we have a bargaining hour, in which she can present to me the programmes she's desperately missing and would be so out of touch with her friends if she didn't see them. And now I expect a wave of "how old fashioned are you"...5 year olds don't really have anything to do with remotes.

Same here. Those were the days. It wasn't too difficult though as there were only two channels to choose from.

Those were even more the days when there was only one channel and only one sender. Alexandra Palace. And it didn't send much as the usual scenario was 'We apologize for the breakdown in transmission. We are trying to trace the fault. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible'. Programmes started at about eight in the evening; in the morning they showed a Demonstration film. Same film every day.
Every time a car went past the end of the road or anyone used any electrical device in the area, the screen was covered with wobbly lines and ZZZZZzzzzz. Fortunately very few people had cars and/or electric household gadgets. The TV screen was covered with snow all the time, you could only see the picture if you sat in complete darkness and the linehold and framehold knobs were on the back of the set, so when the picture starting whizzing round again, you had to use a mirror to see the front so that you knew when it had been stopped. Yeah, those were the days. Things have come a long way since then but at least there were no quarrels about the programme to be watched or who had control over the remote!

The actual answer to this is similar to a recent conversation with my 9 yr old son about when he will be allowed his own mobile phone; having worked through the 'everyone else in the class has one' and 'well, what age will I be when I get one?' arguments, he latched onto what he thought was the killer one: 'So how old were you when YOU got your first mobile?'

'Let me see... *quick count on fingers*... 28'

He hasn't mentioned it since.

kodokan

PS: To the OP, it's perfectly normal kid behaviour; our kids watch all their TV via a recorded box and I've got my 5 yr old learning to read programme titles on the promise of splitting remote time between her and her brother.
