Ok, call me crazy and boring but I really miss my friends. Especially my gay friends. Let me explain this a bit. I got into a plane today and there was this openly gay steward and I just remembered the amount of fun I used to have with them. The cook outs, the going clubbing (my husband hates it so they make great company), the nice tea parties, oh my god the shopping! and the gossip. Oh how I miss them!
I just hope I can soon make a new group here in Basel (Anyone out there? ).

So my question is: who do you miss the most if you have been here for a short time, and who do you miss still if you have been here quite a while?

yes i miss my friends too. especially my old friends, who've been through so many experiences with me. affairs and escapades and revolutions and failures and weddings, and all that a whole life accumulates. and then i miss my family. now that i have a small daughter, i feel the need for that family support, the unconditional love (leavened by some stern advice), the sense of belonging.

O M Goodness gal, what you describe reminds me a lot of myself.

My best friend and I made friends with our gay neighbors and when they moved we kept in touch... they'd host parties and provide drinks and such and we would do the cooking stuff.

I think there was someone recently on the introductions portion who moved to Basel and was looking for a new "fag hag" (his words, not mine!!)... need to look for that post...

Yep, I miss hanging out with that group of friends, somewhere along the past 2 years (prepping to move here, dealing with frustrating and depressingly slow paperwork... I was not terribly fun to be around) I've lost touch with them all.

In fact my best friend is gay, and I miss him a lot. We used to live in the NL but he had to go back to Peru as his master's finished.

I miss not missing anything If that makes any sense? If something is truly worth missing then you should not be away from it/them I think I am high on tea leaves.

Yes it makes sense Sometimes you can not be close to the people you miss, my mom for instance I miss her tons but have sort of getting used to it and we call everyday (phone card!).

Very philosophical for a Saturday morning.

While on one hand I agree, on the other hand...

That's what vacations are for!



On a personal note:
Growing up military and growing up part of a large family, I value my space and time alone.

Along with that military upbringing goes the tendency to make very close friendships even though we know we're going to move away.

I value every moment I had with every friend I made along the way... that doesn't mean that I necessarily need them to be part of my daily life now. I miss them when we are parted but that makes the moments we do spend together all the more special.

I don't miss anyone just right now simply because all those I care about are for once near and around me and those furthest away are within Europe. I truly cherish this and I don't want to miss to appreciate each moment of it.

But I do remember what it is like to miss someone, like my parents, my siblings, dear fun neighbors, people I met while traveling or working with. Lovers I lived dramas with and then still missed them. Others I got close to and they died in an accident or through whatever. I hate pain. I hate to suffer. I hate loosing people. But this is what life is made of.

I think this forum helps a lot, or at least tries to, fill a gap which is unavoidably created when someone's moving to a new country, in that it offers the possibility to share experiences, ask questions, rant a round or two, and most of all, meet others in the same situation as their own. I bet, or hope at least, this helps a lot to overcome all that one misses from home. But nothing will ever replace it truly I think.

Now for those who miss their gay friends or think lesbians are fantastic, luckily for them, they can be found just about anywhere right? And fag hags ... well that's gonna get me off topic ... !!!

Be assured it isn't because you miss certain people in your life.

I am sure I was not offending anyone... you never know I guess. I'd have thought people were more tolerant.

I miss my Mum, my gay brother and my teenage daughter, who isn't around as much as she used to be.
