Moving to Petit Lancy - schools

Hello,

Finally we've found an apartment, we move to Petit-Lancy at the end of the month. I have a few questions regarding schooling if anyone is able to help?

My son's Birthday is the end of Sept, he has just gone 4 - I was told by a nursery nurse at his creche that he could start school now, as long as his Birthday is before 31st Oct, does anyone know if this is true or does it depend on the school? I seem to get conflicting info from the web.

I was thinking of putting him into the local state school, though he doesn't speak one iota of French yet, although the reasoning seems to be that he'll end up speaking French fluently much quicker - I am worried that all of the school will speak French and he will just be sitting in class not able to understand anyone at all - can you imagine how scary that would be? How long would it take him to fit in and make French?

We plan to stay here at the very least for 6 years which is why I was thinking state school rather than private, though his nursery nurse at the creche said she thought he was upset when he couldn't communicate with the other children. Speaking French fluently and understanding what his teachers are saying is really going to take some time.

I guess I should speak to the schools but if anyone has any expereinces they can share positive or negative I would be very grateful.

Thanks for any help! Sarah

Re: Moving to Petit Lancy - schools

We live in Petit Lancy and our oldest was 4 years old when we moved here. Our other son was not able to go as he was a year younger and we could not get him into kindergarden at the time. He has been at school now one year and he is now fluent in the French. Our youngest goes to the kindergarden so she had the best start.

They are all in fluent in French (for their age) I see them get on with their class mates and teachers with no problem at all.

The school year as I understand it is from the begining of September and hence they count the age from there. This is what we were told.

Definitely state school is a good idea, they make an effort to integrate non French speaking children and you would be surprised how quickly they fit in. I really do rate the schools in this area, they are very good in my opinion.

Hope the above helps.

At that age he's almost certain to pick up French really quickly.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in Petit-Lancy, it's unlikely that he's the only child who doesn't speak French at home.

Re: Moving to Petit Lancy - schools

Thats great, thanks for this.

I thought it was September start too - so he won't go until next year, thats fine if I can find a nursery a few mornings, he's so bored (of just me for company all day) and misses his friends!

If the schools are helpful then I'm sure it will be fine - myself and his dad don't speak any French though when we get settled we're going to have lessons so if he doesn't start school until next year then we have time to teach his some basics ourselves too.

I really want him to speak 2 languages fluently, its a great opportunity, would seem a shame to waste it.

Thanks for your imput!
