Avoiding (social) alcohol

I've been trying to socialise a bit more and meet new people. Currently this translates to going out and drinking 4-5 days a week and at this rate, my liver is going to pack-in.

Any suggestions for socialising (except sport) which doesn't involve being in a bar/pub?

Alkoholfrei?

Some of them are not half bad.

Re: Avoiding (social) alcohol

Sounds very familiar... I felt exactly same way after 3 weeks long holidays and I am trying to avoid any opportunity to go out like fire, unless of course you are kind of person who can sip a coke while others delight in poison and even then, I am afraid, only cinema, theater and Sunday church gatherings are the way to go...

I don't mind sport, but I've already filled my quota of sport activities. Just want to balance out my activities a bit and reduce the bar/pub activities and replace them with something else.

Other interests include dance (ballroom, jazz) and theatre (but I don't know Zurich theatre/arts offerings very well).

Perhaps a games night....cards etc.

Jass seems to be quite the popular past time here, although you might have to take up smoking.

Good idea! Though I think I'd need to find a non-smoking group

Hi Phil, I know you said "no sports" but it seems mountain bike riding is the most popular social activity in Switzerland right now. Seriously.

Re: Avoiding (social) alcohol

Why is going to the bar/pub related to alcoholic drinks only?
Or is drinking anything else make you look like less of a rough/tough man in front of your pals

Re: Avoiding (social) alcohol

When the first reply to a serious question is an attempt at being humourous, the whole thread is derailed and the answer to the original post often doesn't come. Full support to the mod who stepped in. Once the OP's question is answered then it's open house for the jokers. Ho ho ho

Cheers

Re: Avoiding (social) alcohol

I'm with the OP. Since moving here, my alcohol consumption has skyrocketted, esp in the past year when I became single. At least 2-3 expat events per week, dinners with friends, talacker nights, ...

I think the best bet is to just stop drinking. I find that I am very much in need of holding a glass or bottle in my hand regardless. When I stopped drinking in the past, I just drank water. Unfort here in CH, that can be just as expensive as drinking booze. Ditto for pop. (Pop and juice are best avoided anyways as they have more calories than beer.)

I guess it just takes some self-control.

I am considering going off booze along with Movember.

If you find a good board game group, lemmie know. I've got a serious Settlers of Catan addiction and havn't played in months.

You know the rules - derail and risk deletion. Till now it has been pretty
relaxed. A bit of discipline or control is needed now and then.

It was removed for the quote used.

Re: Avoiding (social) alcohol

To the OP, I have recently started organising dinners at my place. Inviting people over and such. Although there is still drinking, with the good banter and time spent cooking, there is less drinking. But very social.
