Advice please! Hosting Swiss exchange student in New Jersey

Hi all,
New to this site. I have a 23 year old swiss exchange student living with us for a year on a work permit. He is a great young man, but I'm sure that he can use some new friends. Any suggestions. We live in New Jersey and I was hoping to help him connect. Thanks...........Jackie

Re: American with Swiss Exchange Student

There is an international website called meetup.com...you should check it out. It has a ton of meet-up events for US cities...people interested in book clubs, various sports, politics, expats getting together, language groups and so on. Good luck!

What types of things does he want/like to do? Are there any local clubs that would interest him (biking, outdoors, sailing, etc.?) He's working, so is he meeting anyone on the job?

It is really great that you want to help him socialize, but are you sure he even wants to? I mean, we all have different priorities, maybe he has a few acquaintances and it takes him some time to get comfortable with new people. How long has he been there in New Jersey anyways? Is he there for a year or has he been there for a year already?

what language does he speak? are you near nyc? if so there's a ton of places that he can go to make friends and find things of his interest.

what does he like to do? meetup.com is great for people looking for friends to be active with, hiking, dinners, tennis, etc.
what about programs or activities at nearby universities? that's always a good place to meet people around that age.
