Blocked sinus medication?

Hi

Can anyone recommend an over-the-counter remedy for blocked sinuses?
(Blocked maxillary sinuses causing toothache).

Something like Sudafed in the U.S. or Sinutab in the U.K.

We tried some time ago but the pharmacist couldn't find anything that cross referenced these so gave us some menthol which didn't do the trick. She also tried to fob us off with some homeopathic stuff but my wife told her this wasn't wanted.

Thanks!

We've used one, but unfortunately I cannot remember the name.

PM if this thread falls off the bottom and you don't get any "satisfation" and I'll check when I get home tonight...

Re: Blocked sinus medication?

I use Otrinol, which you have to ask for at the pharmacy. It does have Wikipedia reference-linkPseudoephedrine in it, but that's the only thing which unclogs my blocked sinuses. It is very similar to Sudafed.

A box of 10 capsules cost 10.95 (yes, I've got a box in front of me )

Re: Blocked sinus medication?

You could try a dive shop to see what they recommend if you do not get any joy at the Pharmacy. Hope you get something soon, can be very painful.

Don't want to steal the thread, but is there anything in Switzerland
similar to Benadryl?

Re: Blocked sinus medication?

I usually use:

- Nasobol or Wicks for inhaling - in combination with Otrivin (nose spray) and Alcacyl (fever, pain)

- If you want something stronger it will be Pretuval from Bayer. I use it when being on travel because it's fast and strong.

Get well soon!

That's looks like the stuff. All the others seem to have phenylephrine which doesn't work as well.

Thanks!

Re: Blocked sinus medication?

I use Claritin (Loratadine). Claritin-D (Loratadine with Pseudoephedrine) from the States works better but I have only found Claritin here which does enough for me.

In general - go and see your doctor. If it is urgent then anything with pseudoefedrine should do. In long term Sinupret (and drinking a lot of water) seems to help.

Re: Blocked sinus medication?

The missus just called, so I asked her:

Nasanex spray (she thinks that's prescription - though always worth an ask)

Sinupret forte (must have the "forte" element otherwise no use)

gute Besserung...

Re: Blocked sinus medication?

Seems like a FAQ, this one! My advice for relief is sinal rinsing, using something like Emser salts.

I do that, then lie down with my head back for 20 minutes, and it greatly reduces the pain. As does 400mg neurofen + chilled white wine

Re: Blocked sinus medication?

In addition to the Sinupret forte (about CHF 20 for 50 tablets), you might try Nasobol tablets that you put in a bowl of very hot water and inhale (put a towel over your head/bowl). Nasobol costs about CHF 12 for 30 tablets.

I also suggest Rhinomer saline solution (canister under pressure). Costs about CHF 22 for the big bottle/canister. Available at the pharmacy as well. Do it in each nostril and it helps clean out the sh*t. Do this at least twice a day.

I was prescribed this a couple of months ago and it is indeed something you need a prescription for.

Works a treat, though.

The doctor also recommended using it in conjunction with a saline spray (Fluemare) and standing in a skin-stripping-heat shower to let the steam/salt water combo do its job.

If this is has been a long term problem then consider stopping consumption of dairy products especially milk. Milk can be the cause of sinus problems including headaches.
