Basel schooling - recommendations?

I'm moving to Basel sometime before the next school year (Sept 2010) and I have four children, 20 months, 8, 10 and 14. Obviously the older three will need to be schooled, and I plan to put them into state schools.

I am lucky enough not to have to travel into an office every day, so I plan to live near where I can find a good school for most/all of them. As a preference Id like to find a school that was a little outside the center of the city so it had more space and good sports facilities (weve been central city for too long and wed like a change)

Has anyone had good experience in a particular area in or around Basel? Even better still, can anyone point me towards a list of schools for children of these ages? Do they have a results list like they do in the UK so one can see performance over the year(s)

Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: Basel schooling - recommendations?

Look for the threads about good places to live near Basel - that pretty much correlates to good schools - but a lot depends on what teacher(s) they get. Your 14 year old may find things rather challenging if he/she doesn't speak German, though he/she should get help from the community with German, and have a year in an integration class. My son was 10 when we first came here, and had no German, and he's done fine, so you don't need to worry about the younger ones.

There are no league tables. Generally, your kids go to the nearest school. There is some scope for choice if both communities agree.

I live in Binningen, very close to Basel, and our local school is pretty good.

I know this is an old thread, but thought it perhaps better to add info here, rather than starting yet another new thread.

The aboveis the official website for the Baselstadt education authority. It has all sorts of interesting information for parents - from philosophy of education, a list of schools, to information regardingthe planned future direction of local education. (translated into English)

Re: Basel schooling - recommendations?

You need to also consider that - AFAIK - sport isn't linked to schools that much - most children who are interested in more competitive sports tend to be members of a local club.

However, my experience is limited to younger children - maybe someone could comment on that as from the OP's post I get the impression he's thinking of the UK system where sport is part of the curriculum.
