organizing a move on your own - what was your timeline like?
 
i need to relocate my family (husband, wife, toddler, baby on the way, and dog) to switzerland next year. other than paying for some expenses, it looks like the employer will be doing nothing in the way of helping to organize the move.

how much time should i set aside for this project? it feels too early to start now. but i also don't want a panic rushed feeling. i also want to factor in the various stages of pregnancy and post partum i will be going through and whether i'll have the time or energy to be doing various things at that time.

i wish this was like wedding planning where there were checklist timelines telling you exactly what to do when!

i was thinking a good summer plan would be to start getting rid of our stuff and downsizing so that i can have a garage sale late august. i'm also making a list of big ticket items that i want to buy in the u.s. before the 6 month period pre-move so that we don't have to pay taxes on them. for example car seats, strollers, and the like.

any other ideas would be greatly appreciated :o !

I have done this quite a few times. It is never too early to start.

There are plenty of International Removal companies that offer advice pages with timescales/timelines and checklists. Google for one near you in your own country.

Pickfords offer good advice for UK movers, perhaps you have a US equivalent... this one too...

My own advice , is that after moving so many times, I realised the easiest way was to leave everything behind in storage or sell it. Much less hassle, on top of money saved, less expenses to replace in the new Country. I always move and travel light.

This forum is a goldmine for people in your situation, your best friend here is the search function. Specific questions are always answered.

We started with some things a good 6 months before we left. We were able to deal with my husband's detached retina the death of my father in the middle of our move. What I'm saying is to build time in and roll with it when the inevitable crap hits the ventilator.

There is a great site with lots of moving info... Movingscam.com -it is a forum. Very useful. Might be .org.

If you plan on putting your children in nursery then now is not too early.

We decided on a few places that we would quite like to live in (and checked out rental prices on homegate to see what we could get) and then booked appointments to view the nurseries. We then viewed them over a couple of days and reserved a place in the only one we liked.

If this is not a worry then you still need a few months to look for somewhere to live. Will the employers pay for a local agency to do the ground work for you in this respect? This is good if you don't speak then lingo.

Oh, and start learning the language (but I didn't :msnblush:).

thanks for the tips.

i know in advance that getting rid of our stuff we'll be the hardest part. i have trouble letting go. you never know when you "might" need something :msnblush: .

The benefits of letting go far outweigh the hassle of attachments.
Anything you *might* need can easily be bought again or borrowed.
Free up your mind and dump the clutter.

My husband flew to Bern March 22nd 2009 ( his job started April 1st), he found an appartement and moved in JUne 1st. I joined him with our 2 girls at the end of my contract from Shanghai JUne 29th. He had started to buy furniture and stuff for the flat and had registered our oldest to kindergarden..We had no shipping ( less than 1 cubic meter) so we made a few trips to IKEA ... the best thing is that when we arrive, the kids room was nicely set up with a few toys and a bed and a curb for my girls to feel at home as soon as they arrived/

That's an impressive turnaround time for your husband!

I'm thinking I'll try to downsize one room of our apartment each week. We have a LOT of stuff :msnblush: .

I am currently in the process of moving at the moment myself and am actually finding it quite liberating............so far. I hit the bootsale tomorrow with my dad's pasting table which will be filled with my lifes long collection of utter rubbish lol.

So for me.........I left work on 30th June and begun the process of clearing out the rubbish. The removal firm were booked and are due to collect on 30th July. The stuff I am bringing is fairly minimal. Bunk beds for the kids, reclining leather sofas that I love and can sleep on quite comfortably, when the other half snores too loudly, and I move rather than put a pillow over his head! :D Basic kitchen stuff.

Our last flight out of blighty is 7th August and the dog is booked in to follow us shortly after, having his last jab on Tuesday. I found lurking on here and taking in alot of very useful information helped and I am really only taking this month to sort everything out. So far so good! I contacted a school direct quite cheekily and they have been most helpful and my son starts school at the beginning of the new term. So all in all......... a little while here gleaning helpful tips and some feelers put out a couple of months ago for quotes etc.

Of course had 1 bonus that we already had out apartment and other half has been there for a little while.
