Getting Married in France -> Need a Certificate of not being married?

Hi All,

I'm getting married to my girlfriend this summer, in a town near Paris. She's French and I'm English, but we're both living near Zürich.

Apparently, the French authorities require a "certificate of no impediment" to getting married.

According to the UK embassy web site, this certifitacate doesn't really exist, the best you can do is have a sworn statement that you're not married.

Does anyone know where I can get such a document and who it would need to be sworn in from of? Would a notary (e.g. the one at Enge) be able to do this?

All thoughts appreciated!

Thanks,
Phil

The embassy or consulate can usually arrange this. You have to go along to the embassy, swear honestly and not smile, then hand over some cash and they give you the document.

I didn't have one, I had a letter from the Embassy saying they did not provide it and explained a translation would cost me HEAPS and they said "ok , for you we'll let it go.".

Speak nicely to the civil servant in the town hall, use your gf's connections if needed and you should get out of it.

Ps., if they insist on you providing it- it must be in French.

Don't know if the website says this for France, but to get married here you do need one and the consulate do provide it. I know it coz I just got one.

Re: Getting Married in France -> Need a Certificate of not being married?

Hmm, I guess I need to talk to the French town hall.

We're already getting off light by not requiring a 'Certificate of Custom Law' whatever that is, but I guess we have to find out what else they want.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Cheers,
Phil

Lets see...a quick google on "certificate of non impediment UK" says:

http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-...NI-nulla-ostas

Remember to get it legalised.

You're welcome.

Hmm...how come I never found that before in the plethora of seaches I did on Google before...you know how sometimes you can end up in a blind alley?

Nonetheless, thanks for the link, hopefully that'll do the trick!

Cheers,
Phil
