Fall flu 2010

I saw on Facebook that couple of my fellow EFers caught the flu, and needless to say, I have it too.

Need a whining thread about, it is absolutely nasty

And I'm all alone and nobody loves me and even the dog won't speak to me, and I'm so cold and my throat huts so bad, and I'm out of tea already and and and...

How are you holding up?

Same here, drinking loads of tea, wrapped up warm. Get well soon, Begga!

Can I once again appeal to people with colds and sore throats NOT to go to work / uni, seriously, it's counter-productive. A few weeks ago we had half the team missing because on member came in sick and everyone caught it. Thankfully I was on holiday then...

Re: Fall flu 2010

You can already get the flu-shot for this year at some places. Please do and go get it. It'll make you and everyone around you a lot happier if you do.

Had it once, was severely ill - ended up with pneumonia. So I guess it's not the best option for everyone...

Allergic reaction to the flu shot has to be miserable. I'm sorry.

Just to make something clear though, you can't get the flu from the flu shot. That's not how vaccines work. You might have the flu already at the same time you get the flu shot (seeing how many people already have the flu, I'd believe that). (Sources for this: here, here, and here)

The more you know.....

Government sponsored immunization projects? Call me skeptical. More likely implanting you with some virus to facilitate purging the population at some point in the not too distant future.

How much does it cost (around Zurich), and where do you get it done (at your doctor's or elsewhere? This is my first winter here!).

My company (before mobing here) used to pay for it and organise, so it was easy...

I have always reacted badly to anything that it meant to "immunise" you against stuff, I didn't know then that a lot of people with autoimmune disorders do. Now I do and just try and live as healthily as possible so I don't get sick in the first place...

Re: Fall flu 2010

Does anyone know if the flu jab here is including the swine flu?

I was reading a UK paper online and over there it is included which has angered folk who were told that fact after they had received it.

that does not bode well with productivity....

Out of curiosity Ouchboy, what part of that do you refer to when remarking about productivity? People absent from work due to being sick... or people going to work even though they are sick?

While productivity does suffer from absentee employees, it suffers worse from "presenteeism" which is people coming to work even though they can not perform adequately due to some illness. Productivity is actually adversely affected to a greater degree by "presenteeism" than it is by "absenteeism."

The Hidden Costs of Presenteeism

Quote:
The total cost of presenteeism to US employers has been increasing, and estimates for current losses range from about $150 to $250 billion annually. Costs for presenteeism are about 60 percent of the total cost of worker illness.
I'm with Kittster on this, as although I do not have the same conditions she does, I do tend to catch "everything" AND I know people (including my mother) who take immune suppressors in order to keep their bodies from killing them.

Despite knowing my mother was on such medication as well as knowing that another coworker had Lupus, pressure was very strong to come to work unless dying... so my mother and the woman with Lupus were continually ill and THEIR raises and performance ratings were affected by their need to stay home because of these illnesses that other people had brought.

So, everyone please... if you get sick, STAY HOME!
If you go to work sick, you're only going to do a crap job (in comparison to when healthy) anyhow and you risk making other people sick on top of it.

Edit:
In my vehement opinion of the issue, I forgot to say this:
Sorry you're feeling poorly Begga! I hope you feel better soon!
(I also hope it isn't my fault you're ill as I spent the afternoon baking with Sherry whom I believe you saw the next day. eeps!!)

The cartoon Ouchboy added didn't show up for me right away, now I've seen it, I think it's clear that he agrees with us, Peg

I've started telling sick people who turn up to either go home or stay out of my office. Since I'm paid by the hour, being sick is an expensive past time for me, no work, no pay.

(I'm gonna feel really bad if Begga DID get sick via our mutual connection! There's a story to my defense but out of consideration for the character of the mutual friend, I'll not post it here. )

Re: Fall flu 2010

Begga, I feel for you. Four weeks ago I got the flu, that was a nasty one. I was completely out of order. Hubby had to take some time off to take care of me and our daughter (I was not able to take care of her). I was left with all the symptoms and pain without any meds to help me get over it.

Get well soon all you sickies. I am very pleased you are staying at home!

If anyone lives in Bern, I will be happy to run errands for them (provided the coins are dipped in vinegar first!). Send a PM with details of what you need.

Re: Fall flu 2010

Already had it at the start of September. Had to keep going through it as my brother was visiting. That was a tough week, although it wasn't as bad as the last time I had flu, which funnily enough I managed to catch pretty much directly after a flu jab.

This was subsequently followed by a bout of norovirus, according to my doctor, at the end of September which laid me out for 48 hours.

Hopefully I'm done and dusted for this winter.

In my first job the policy was: " Unless you are dead, we want you here. In fact, even if you are dead you need to come in so we can check"
